Wednesday, February 17, 2010 Page 2 of 2 THE WHITE HOUSE WASHINGTON July 6, 1971 ADMINISTRATIVELY CONFIDENTIAL MEMORANDUM FOR: JOHN DEAN FROM: DAPRAY MUIR Dm SUBJECT: Republican Law Firms Preparation of a list of Republican Law Firms requested by you is currently awaiting various inputs deemed necessary to a complete list. The Republican National Committee has yet to supply us with any firm names which they might have on file. Cope Stewart, Secretary of the 1968 Lawyers for Nixon, has provided us with a list of the State Chairmen of the Lawyers for Nixon. Mike Saperstein believes that he can obtain the complete list of Lawyers for Nixon. Even with such a list, extracting the names of predominantly Republican law firms will remain a significant problem. I would suggest the quickest and most appropriate way would be to have Cope Stewart write the 50 State Chairmen a letter, indicating a desire to bring up to date his files, and requesting information relating to Republican law firms. Such a letter would be signed by him, as 1968 secretary. No reference to the White House or the current campaign would be necessary. A form of letter is attached hereto as Appendix A. You have indicated that such a plan should not be undertaken without agreement by the Campaign Headquarters. A draft of memorandum inquiring of their views is attached hereto as Appendix B. Please advise your reaction. The alternative is to go through Martindale- Hubbell, comparing the list of Lawyers for Nixon against every law firm listed therein - - or at least those at important geographic areas. Attachments DRAFT Dear : The 1972 campaign is still a year away, but, as you know, it can be of invaluable help to have completed some of the groundwork prior to that time when the action begins. For this reason, I am trying to bring my records up to date on Republican law firms in your state. I wonder if you could send me the names of two or three predominantly Republican firms, firms known for their Republican leanings, in each of the largest urban areas or otherwise politically important areas in your state ? I hope that you have been as pleased as I with the Administration's over-all performance, and that you will be interested in contributing to his re-election in 1972. With best personal regards, I am Sincerely, G. Cope Stewart III Secretary, 1968 Lawyers for Nixon DRAFT MEMORANDUM FOR: FROM: JOHN DEAN SUBJECT: Republican Law Firms We are attempting to compile a list of predominantly Republican law firms throughout the country. This task requires that we enquire of persons knowledgeable of such matters in the various subdivisions of the country. Because of the possible negative repress which White House involvement in such an activity might cause, we would like to have any inquiries sent out by someone not connected with the Executive Office of the President. G. Cope Stewart III, Secretary of the 1968 Lawyers for Nixon, has agreed to send a letter similar to that submitted herewith as Attachment A, to each of the State Chairmen with whom he worked during the 1968 Campaign. Would you please give us your comments and/or recommendations. NIXON-AGNEW CAMPAIGN Chairman-Citizens' Committee Chairman-Lawyers' Committee Other Key ALABAMA William M.
