Wednesday, February 17, 2010 Page 1 of 1 DETERMINED TO BE AN ADMINISTRATIVE MARKING September 29, 1969 E.O. 12035, Section By CRty NARS, Date 6/15/81 6-102 CONFIDENTIAL MEMORANDUM FOR THE ATTORNEY GENERAL Attached is a memo to the Vice President concerning Saturday's political meeting with the President. He said you are to be in on these political discussions also, whenever possible. The President particularly asks that you do everything you can to help In New Jersey with the gentleman up in New Jersey who proved to be so helpful in the 1968 campaign. He thinks this may be crucial, just as you suggested in the brief political meeting we had a week ago -- the one the President could not attend. As you can see, the President is planning on going into New Jersey and Virginia. Also, he has suggested that I get the word to Marchi to let Lindsey have It on Vietnam. There is some question in our minds whether helping Marchi will hurt Procaccino and inevitably help Lindsey. You know the situation better than 1. His feelings on this Lindsey matter are getting stronger. Jerry Leonard has indicated a strong private interest in having Governor Knowles made a consultant to this Administration later this year, and then appointed to a Circuit Court Judgeship as soon as possible next year so that Lieutenant Governor Jack Olsen can move into the Governor's chair for a run for that office in 1970. The President likes this idea very much. Harry S. Dent Deputy Counsel to the President Enclosure MEMORANDUM FOR: THE ATTORNEY GENERAL THE DEPUTY ATTORNEY GENERAL FROM: HARRY S. DENT Clark Mollenhoff of the Coles Publications is one of the best, most honest, and most pro- Nixon reporters In Washington. You may know him personally. I have known him for quite some time. Clark was anxious to get some inside information during the Fortas matter, but I did not bother to contact either of you since I knew how sensitive this was. If there is anything you can ever do at any time to assist him, please do so. The President also regards Clark very highly. You can be sure that If you are dealing with Clark Mollenhoff, you are dealing with an honest man who only wants to help us make this Administration a success. Frank van der Linden, who reports for a number of leading Southern newspapers, is also another good friend. His principal newspaper is the Nashville Banner. As you may know, Captain Stahlman is one of the President's best friends. He is publisher of the Banner. CC: Herb Klein DETERMINED TO BE AN CONFIDENTIAL ADMS LKING E.O. Soutice 6-102 By Date 6/15/81
