TO:
DWIGHT CHAPIN
FROM:
HARRY DENT
Attached is a memorandum for Tom Lias regarding a
request for a brief meeting with the President for
AMPAC leaders. This is most important from the
standpoint of getting their help for Haynsworth and
also on getting control of a tremendous kitty they
are going to distribute in the congressional races
next year. If we stroke these people with such a
meeting, we feel we can get control of the distribution
of $800,000 in congressional campaign funds.
We can keep this to 15 minutes, and keep it off the
record.

FROM:
Harry Dent
As I mentioned to you this morning, Captain James G.
Stahlman, publisher of the Nashville Banner, will be
having lunch with me at 1:00 p.m., Monday. Also on
Monday, Congressman Bill Brock will be meeting with
the President at 11:30 a.m.
The President has no stronger supporter in the publishing
business than Captain Stahlman. Almost every day, he
dedicates his editorial page to the President and also
certain portions of the front page. His Washington
correspondent, Frank Van Der Linden, is the most friendly
and cooperative Washington reporter. Also, he writes for
several other Southern newspapers. When the President
wants me to get across a point in Southern newspapers, I
not only use Frank Van Der Linden to hit several papers,
but he helps me spread it out among other Washington
correspondents reporting in Southern newspapers.
Thus, I strongly recommend - and Herb Klein concurs - that
the President see Captain Stahlman and Frank Van Der Linden
for five minutes at the conclusion of the Brock meeting,
or at least let them come in when the pictures are made
with Brock.
Captain Stahlman will be strongly backing Brock. He wants
to eliminate Gore at all costs.
