Friday, February 26, 2010 Page 1 of 1 d5. Staffump hims August 26, 1969 MEMORANDUM FOR JOHN EHR LICHMAN FROM CLARK R. MOLLENHOFF Today I established clearly that Duff Reed was the man identi- fied in the Pat Ferguson column as having destroyed his Republican card at 1:30 A.M. on June 27, 1969, at the Jockey Club. Three earlier sources had stated that it was probably Duff Reed, but another source within the last 48 hours talked with Reed and, on a direct confrontation on the issue, he said he was the individual involved in the Jockey Club incident. He explained that his action was in the context of a disagreement with the handling of the Knowles matter rather than any ideo- logical or physiological difference. The incident took place following a conversation in which Reed was expressing his displeasure at the Knowles matter. His companion, accord- ing to Reed, commented: "If you feel that way about it, why don't you engage in self immolation at the Pentagon." If the Reed version is accurate, the column on this matter could not have been accurate. Reed states that he works for RCA, but is given a great deal of leeway to work on political projects, some of which are not approved by RCA. One of his special projects, he says, is the promotion of Dr. Mayer of the White House and action in the whole field of hunger and malnutrition. I hope this takes care of your interest in this matter. cc: Mr. Harry Dent Near OFFICE OF THE SPECIAL REPRESENTATIVE StaffMems. FOR TRADE NEGOTIATIONS EXECUTIVE OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT WASHINGTON 20506 August 22, 1969 MEMORANDUM FOR John Ehrlichman Counsel to the President Gordon See PP 4,5,6,10 Harry Dent Deputy Counsel to the President FROM Murray Chotiner General Counsel Enclosed is a copy of the minutes of the Democratic National Committee's Executive Committee meeting held on August 1, 1969. Do not attach any significance to any of the ink notations. They were made by someone else. These minutes come to us through the courtesy of operator 41. Page 5 is missing. I am endeavoring to get a copy of it. However, it may take a few days, as my source is out-of- town. I judge from what is on pages 4 and 6 that it may be im- portant to have page 5. It seems to deal with plans for the 1970 campaign. at MMC:bh Enclosure
