Friday, February 26, 2010 Page 1 of 1 Flanigar MEMORANDUM mehro THE WHITE HOUSE WASHINGTON November 19, 1969 Harry Dent TO: FROM: Peter Flanigan PMO I talked to Dan Lufkin regarding the Harris Poll. He assures me that he has very much in mind their effort to "keep him honest." However, Lufkin feels that Harris has been completely straight- forward. In the future they will have review boards which will review all of the assignments that Harris takes on, will review the methods for carrying those assignments out, and will review the results. Lufkin says it will help him in making sure that Republicans get a fair shake if Harris would occasionally get a Republican contract. This seems reasonable to me. In regard to a Senatorial race in Connecticut, Jerry Milbank tells me he is pressing for Keith Funston. As you know, Keith was head of Trinity College, then President of the New York Stock Exchange, and now Chairman of Olin-Mathison. He has lived for years in Connecticut. However, Keith is 59 years old. While he is a delightful companion, he is not what you call "hard" and does not, in my view, have fire in his belly. I don't know Congressman Meskill but have been led to believe his appeal would not stretch around the state. Mac Baldridge has often been talked about as a Senatorial candidate and we should give this careful thought. As you know Lufkin has asked to be Chairman of Action Now for Connecticut. I think we should urge this. However, we should keep in mind that Dan will be thinking down the road and might well be thinking of the Senatorial seat himself. He has only lived in Connec- ticut for one year which is a major detriment; however, he's young, attractive, and he does have fire in his belly. (Milbank is for Funston). 11 on Haldeman hisary Flemming Meneo November 4, 1969 FOR: Harry Flemming FROM: Harry Dent I understand Clayton S. Harrison, Jr., the State Chairman in Delaware, may need a full- time job rather than a part-time job in order to accomplish the aim of having him retire as State Chairman. You may recall that Jim Allison talked to you about this. Also, Harrison, himself, has talked to me. Harrison is a good friend of the President, but he and others agree that he needs to find an honorable way out of the Chairmanship at this time. Please let me know what you think. HSD:cg ISI Flemming memo September 4, 1969 ADMINISTRATIVELY CONFIDENTIAL TO: Harry Flemming FROM: Bill Timmons SUBJECT: Page Belcher Our very good friend, Page Belcher, requests our assistance in getting Don Hale, Assistant to the Mayor of Tulsa, a Washington, D. C. bureacracy job. Seems that the Mayor is squaring off for Page's seat and Hale will be his manager. Ergo, absence of the top-notch campaign manager makes a campaign even more difficult. Page is requesting our personal assistance in this matter and your attention will be very much appreciated. DCC - Hany Dent - FYI 251 /hemos State July 3, 1969 TO: Peter Flanigan FROM: Harry Dent The National Committee people tell me that all of the Neighbors for Nixon lists have been burned and their long search since the election has led them only to the incinerator or Alan Peterson. Evidently they can get no cooperation from Alan Peterson. I know that Peterson took our lists from the Southern States. Fortunately, I made my man at least keep a copy for South Carolina. Instructions from Alan were to the effect that no one was to keep any lists and that they were all to be turned in to him and later he would return a copy. This never happened. Thus, the State of Texas for instance had 50,000 names, addresses, and telephone numbers of people who volunteered to work for Nixon. Today no one knows where this list is save Alan Peterson. My question is, since you're a good friend of Alan, do you think you can get these lists for us? I'm convinced he must have a copy.
