TO:
DWIGHT CHAPIN
FROM:
HARRY DENT
When Rogers Morton had his meeting with the President
on whether to run for the U. S. Senate or stay as
National Chairman, this matter was never cleared through
me and I learned about it when I saw the Chairman at
the Republican Governors Conference at Hot Springs,
Arkansas. The reason I bring this up is because I
believe I would have cautioned against such a meeting
had I known it was being requested. In fact, with
hindsight now clearly in view, I know I would have.
Unfortunately, I think the President got taken for a
ride on this by our Chairman.
I knew the Chairman had no real intention of running
for the U. S. Senate. Therefore, I was rather amazed
when he told a news conference at Hot Springs that he
had a meeting set up with the President and would have
a news conference immediately following the meeting
with the President. This could only make the President
look like he had been turned down again---like the
Laxalt matter. Therefore, the President had only one
recourse at that point and that was to come out and way
that he had made the decision to keep Morton on as
National Chairman because he was so valuable. As you
can see, only Morton benefited from this. The Republican
Party in Maryland suffered and I do not think it was of
any particular benefit to the President.
Also, I have let the RNC people know that the attached
picture on the front of MONDAY does not do our President
any justice.
