MEMORANDUM FOR
CLARK MacGREGOR
FROM
JOHN EHRLICHMAN
SUBJECT
ED McDANIEL
During the 1960 and 1968 Ninon campaigns, Ed McDamiel was
the travelling sound man. He did a superb job, is extremely
loyal and dedicated to the President and did the 1968 tour without
salary. He had been doing quite a bit of work for the Republican
National Committee (about $150, 000 a year): however, after the
1968 election, he lest the account. During the 1972 primaries
is New Hampshire and Florida, he was asked to do some rallies
on very short notice but has not participated in any other
activities. Evidently, the people at 1701 have not responded
to his proposals for work.
In talking with Ed, I find him an extremely bitter Republican
who will probably vote the Republican ticket but only as a personal
commitment to the President. During my last conversation with
him, he sounded like he wouldn't take a job even If it were sow
effered, but hopefully this thinking can be reversed.
Would it be possible to get a breakdown from someone at the
Committee for the Re-election of any correspondence with Ed
and any proposals that he has submitted, along with reasons why
they were turned down?
Clark, I wouldn't push on this except Ed is an extremely capable
person and it would be a shame to lose him on grounds other than
professional capability.
