Friday, April 02, 2010 Page 1 of 1 August 11, 1969 MEMORANDUM FOR: MR. EHRLICHMAN As the President may have already discussed with you, he wants you and Dent to keep very close to Rog Morton, keep him in on things, and keep him upbeat. The President was concerned that Rog seemed quite discouraged from time to time during the last week. He also wants the Vice President used more on political things. He wants Flanigan used, but only in the area of appoint- ments and patronage, not strategy. He feels Nofziger can be of considerable political value as a mean and dirty guy. He wants the Political Group to meet more often without the President. This he feels would consist of Rog Morton, Dent, the Vice President, Nofziger, Harlow, you, me and Flanigan. He thinks that Rog Morton should preside at these meetings and that they should be held quite regularly, but only infrequently with him. He also wants you and Dent to talk with Rog Morton re- garding the President's participation in upcoming campaigns this year in New Jersey and Virginia -- where he will go only if the polls show we can win -- and next year in the Congressional campaigns. He feels strongly that Vice President Agnew should be the big wheel this year, and that it should be made clear to Morton that the President has an awful lot on Vietnam coming up plus the necessity of getting his program through Congress, and that his participation will have to be very limited. He thinks that Morton, Tower, Wilson, the Vice President, and you and I should have a chat on this soon, get plans settled now so that requests don't pile up and that they don't start expecting more from the President than they are going to get.
