MEMORANDUM
THE WHITE HOUSE
WASHINGTON
April 14, 1970
MEMORANDUM FOR:
H.R. HALDEMAN
FROM:
L. HIGBY
Harry Dent stopped by to see me regarding Clark Mollenhoff.
Apparently Dent has also met with Mollenhoff and would like
to talk with you briefly on the phone about Mollenhoff and his
future. He knows Clark well, is a good friend of his, and
feels that what you are trying to do can be done very
successfully providing we handle Mollenhoff right. His point
is we don't want Mollenhoff to either turn on us, or turn
directly on you or John. He indicates that the Bureau Chief job
for the DesMoines Register will be opening up shortly and this
is a natural position for Clark to move into. He will be syndicated
and we can get whatever information we want to him. Dent will
get his friends working on Mollenhoff indicating that he should
move out to achieve even greater success, but wanted to talk
with you for a moment to make sure all the bases were covered.
On a separate issue, Dent notes that the California people have
requested that Nofziger serve as the direct State contact,
reporting to Chotiner for the upcoming campaign. The Reagan
people aren't too enthusiastic about Chotiner and would prefer
to work directly with Nofziger. This is going to be done but Dent
wanted you to be aware of it.
