MEMORANDUM FOR:
MR. COLSON
I have received several reports from outside that John Sears is openly
promoting his close association with you as evidence of his ability to
get things done at the White House. I am sure there is no basis in
fact to this report, but the appearance of it is bad enough. It is
absolutely imperative, as you well recognize, to make sure that we
have no internal referrals that can lend any credence to this kind of
report and if indeed you are having any communication with Sears in
any way, you had better sit down with him and get him straightened
out, since any allegations of this sort are harmful by their very
existence, even though there is no substance to them.
