Friday, June 11, 2010 Page 2 of 2 MEMORANDUM THE WHITE HOUSE WASHINGTON September 16, 1970 TO: Bob Haldeman FROM: Harry Dent AD With regard to the Joe Job matter in New Jersey, I have discussed this with Bob Haldeman, the President, Governor Cahill, and Nelson Gross. After the discussion with the President, it was agreed that I should first explore the use of Congressman Charlie Sandman of New Jersey, one of the closest personal friends of Job, to try to get him to get Job out of the race. This has been done. I find that Sandman has already tried several times and has failed. Sandman says he is convinced there is no way to get Job out of this race. Job hates Nelson Gross because he feels Gross was anti-Nixon at the Convention while Job was pro- Nixon, that Job got Gross to come around and support the President in the end and Gross got all the credit, and then he has had some other problems whereby Gross has supposedly gotten the credit for Job's good work. He has this very deep-seated feeling against Gross and is determined that he can win because he thinks he can pick up the Hudson County vote. His family has asked him to get out. Many others have requested this, and he still insists on staying in. The President wanted something done on this right away, so I am now contacting Len Hall to get him to make this his first priority project. Hall will go to see Job, listen him out and then determine whether he should bring him down to see the President or have the President call Job on the telephone. The President told Gross the other - 2 - day that he will talk to Job on the phone or in person. The President wanted to offer him a U. S. Marshal's position. However, he does not want a U. S. Marshal's position as he has already been a U. S. Marshal. He wants to beat Gross, and he believes he, Joe Job, will actually win the race and do the President a big favor. DETERMINED TO BE AN ADMINISTRATIVE MARKING E.O. Emp 1-22-81 12065, Section MEMORANDUM By THE WHITE HOUSE WASHINGTON confidented September 11, 1970 MEMORANDUM FOR : MR. DENT Re: New Jarry The President asked again what's being done about Joe Job. He raised the point that if Job is a problem the President will see him and get him in line but he hasn't heard anything back on this and is waiting for either a recommendation for his action or a report that everything is moving the way it should be. H.R. HALDEMAN September 8, 1970 MEMORANDUM FOR : MR. FINCH The President is considering bringing Lyn Hall in as a glad hander and political operative. He would use him to go into the states to make the deal in the way that Murray is not good at handling. He feels me need someone more subtle for many of these things. For example, to work on Dave Cargo and get him squared away or work on the problem in Vermont of bringing the Lieutenant Governor in the line behind Prouty, etc. Rose Woods is making the contact with Hall.
