Friday, June 11, 2010 Page 1 of 1 Iss October 16, 1970 MEMORANDUM FOR: H.R. HALDEMAN FROM: L. HIGBY Governor Laxalt indicated to you in your conversation yesterday that there is a need for more Howard Hughes help. In regard to this should you call John Mitchell or someone else and put into effect the suggestion that Governor Laxalt indicated of throwing a bit of a scare into the Las Vegas gambling interests due to the pending election of Cannon, and also have somebody talk to Bob Mayhew about getting behind the campaign in stronger fashion. MEMORANDUM THE WHITE HOUSE WASHINGTON October 13, 1970 TO: Harry Dent FROM: Tom Lias Tom SUBJECT: New Jersey Fund Dinner Following your call from the press concerning the allegation that social invitations to the White House were being peddled in New Jersey at $10,000 each, I contacted Elmer Bobst and the State Finance Chairman, Milford Vieser. As you know, there have been discussions concerning this proposed stag affair for some time. In fact, Elmer Bobst took it up with the President himself a few weeks ago at Camp David. A list of about forty names was submitted by Vieser and pre- liminary soundings were under way with these prospective invitees in New Jersey. Vieser claims that everything was being handled with great subtlety and discretion. Nonethe- less, they were bumping into some unhappiness as they made contacts. Nobody was being shaken down for ten grand, but I can well imagine that, in the tradition of New Jersey politics that I have sometimes observed, the fund raisers may have been a little over-zealous. At any rate, it seems to me that we are in a precarious position at this point. If we follow through with the dinner, it certainly is going to get out that the event took place, particularly now that the press is on the scent. The size of the list is probably too big to be manageable for any kind of subtle handling. Practically all of the monied New Jersey business people have been touched several times by now to help the Gross campaign. Another approach, particularly if it is done in a heavy handed way, only tends to irritate some of these people who are not particularly charmed by Nelson Gross in the first place. We have already found out that at least somebody up there is not reluctant to talk to the press, and we can only expect that if we follow through with the original plans that there would be more. Attached is the list that Mr. Bobst and Mr. Vieser submitted. Anton, The Honorable Mark Camp, Hugh D. Chairman of the Board Chairman of the Board Suburban Propane Gas Corp. Union Camp Corp.
