HALDEMAN Would you please undertake, as a special project, liaison with Billy Graham and his people. He was enormously helpful to us in the Border South in 1968 and will continue to be in 1972, but we need to have someone in charge of this organizational activity at an early date. For example, in going after our breakthrough in the Catholic front we have to remember that our primary source of support will be among the fundamentalist Protestant, and we can probably substantially broaden that base of support. CC: Mr. Dent HRH:LH:cg THE WHITE HOUSE Memothchall WASHINGTON Klein November 30, 1970 MEMORANDUM FOR: H.R. HALDEMAN FROM: THE PRESIDENT On the political front, it is important to start an early liaison with Billy Graham and his people. He was enormously helpful to us in the Border South in '68 and will continue to be in '72. But, we need to have someone in charge of this organizational activity at an early date. For example, in going after our breakthrough on the Catholic front we have to remember that our primary source of support will be among the fundamentalist Protestants, and we can probably substantially broaden that base of support. DETERMINED TO BE AN December 8, 1970 ADMINISTRATIVE MARKING E.O. 12065, Section 6-102 By Emp NARS, Date 10-1-87 CONFIDENTIAL MEMORANDUM FOR: MR. KLEIN FROM: H.R. HALDEMAN SUBJECT: Friendly Persuasion We should undertake an effort to get the film Friendly Persuasion rerun throughout the country. Frank Shakespeare has indicated that the best manner in which to handle this would be to advise the individual stations, which hold rights to this film, of the details of identification of the Presidential family with the film. He feels that most stations would then play the film as a local "special" with a particular promotional effort. Local Republican committees could be used as a backstop, as appropriate. Frank has indicated that your office should probably be the one to spearhead this project and I agree. He has a list of the stations which now hold the film Friendly Persuasion and will be happy to forward it to you. Your office should put together a complete and thorough background record on the relationship of the family in the film to the President's family, and we should then get this informa- tion to the television stations through an appropriate source. Please let me know your plan with regard to this matter sometime during the next week. cc: Hon. Frank Shakespeare HRH:LH;ba:LH:cg
