MEMORANDUM FOR: H. R. HALDEMAN
FROM:

RE:
Celebrities Reception Guest List

You asked for an update on the list of people we are inviting to the
celebrities reception. Rather than giving you 25 pages again, may
I please just give you the changes:
Deletions
Lorne Greene - The Committee is still working on him and
they have asked that we hold up on his invitation.
Joe South (Nashville List) - The reason given by the Committee
for his deletion is a bit sketchy, but I believe it relates to a
criminal offense,
James Garner -- Mrs. Garner is an avid McGovern supporter.
Mr. Garner will definitely not work for the President.
Marvene Jones (Hollywood Reporter)
Not as friendly as the
Committee originally thought.
Additions
Nashville Committed Celebrity List:
Doug Kershaw
Tommy Roe
Billy Crash Craddock
Billy Jo Royal

Miss Reba Hanncock
Miss Dottie West

Committed Celebrities:
Dr. and Mrs. John French (Dorothy Kirsten)
Executive Committee:
Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Firestone
Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Klein
Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Schulman
Mr. and Mrs. William Self
Mr. and Mrs. Jules C. Stein
White House Staff:
Taft Schreiber has recommended that Peter Flanigan
and Jim Loken be invited to attend the celebrities
reception. The reasoning is that the two aforementioned
gentlemen have "carried the mail" in following up the
movie industry meeting in San Clemente last year and
Taft was quite insistent that these two persons should
be given an invitation.

The Celebrities Committee is reviewing the complete list of those who
have entertained at the White House as well as those who have entertained
at other Presidential functions (e.g., Pete Fountain in New Orleans in 1970)
and will have a determination by the end of today as to which people should
be invited to the reception. You will note that Dorothy Kirsten is already
on the committed celebrities list.
The invitations will go out on Thursday, August 10th, The reason for the
delay was in the printing of the invitations. The envelopes are all addressed.
We are already beginning to receive inquiries from staff members regarding
their attendance at the celebrities reception, One inquiry has come from
Don Rumsfeld who wants to know "if he should be there". I advised him that
this is basically an opportunity for the committed celebrities to shake hands
with the President and it would be a relatively brief function. Therefore,
he should not change any plans just to attend that one-hour cocktail reception.

I think that our policy should be that senior White House staff should
6
be invited to the reception, P:
may are out in California
already in conjunction with the President's visit. This would include
people such as Kissinger, Haldeman, and probably Klein.
