Friday, July 02, 2010 Page 1 of 1 Panded Arebally to Shumway o Clawson- - Follow up 10dayr tu H ACTION MEMO 6/29 The basic theme should be gotten out of our fear of an all out liberal media support for McGovern. Our concern is that this will be even more intensive than the liberal media support for Humphrey in 1968 as was pointed out in the Efron book. We, therefore, are forgetting about our position in the polls because we look at what the media did to Nixon and for Humphrey last time around, and recognize that it can, and undoubtedly will, be done again this time. This would be ideal material for a Buckley, Kevin Phillips, or Lasky column. HRH 6/20/72 L memor to ACTION MEMO Clawson should develop a plan for a wire service and/or a network man or a columnist to write a letter to every member of the Senate saying that in view of the charges that IT&T has done favors for the Senators, I believe that it's important to clear the record and I would, therefore, appreciate your response to the two following questions. 1. Have you ever had a contribution to any of your campaigns from an officer of IT&T or any of its subsidiaries. If so, when and in what amount? 2. Have you ever accepted any transportation or complimentary hotel facilities from IT&T or any of its subsidiaries? Any answers that are received on this could then be used in a column but obviously it'll be ignored by a number of Senators and those who decline to answer should be listed in the column. HRH 3/31/72 ACTION MEMO Secretary Rogers has suggested that for campaign purposes, our approach to Blacks might be most effective by going via the Black celebrities who are for us. He was especially impressed with Sammy Davis, Jr. 's reaction to his visit to the White House and the great mileage we've gotten from Pearl Bailey. We should be starting now, of course, to line up celebrities and put out some public announcements of celebrity support. We also need to answer the question of who is handling sport celebrities at this time. HRH 1/24/72
