Our concern is that this\nwill be even more intensive than the liberal media support for\nHumphrey in 1968 as was pointed out in the Efron book.\nWe, therefore, are forgetting about our position in the polls because\nwe look at what the media did to Nixon and for Humphrey last time\naround, and recognize that it can, and undoubtedly will, be done again\nthis time.\nThis would be ideal material for a Buckley, Kevin Phillips, or\nLasky column.\nHRH\n6/20/72\nL memor to\nACTION MEMO\nClawson should develop a plan for a wire service and/or\na network man or a columnist to write a letter to every\nmember of the Senate saying that in view of the charges\nthat IT&T has done favors for the Senators, I believe\nthat it's important to clear the record and I would,\ntherefore, appreciate your response to the two following\nquestions.\n1. Have you ever had a contribution to any of your campaigns\nfrom an officer of IT&T or any of its subsidiaries. If so,\nwhen and in what amount?\n2. Have you ever accepted any transportation or complimentary\nhotel facilities from IT&T or any of its subsidiaries?\nAny answers that are received on this could then be used\nin a column but obviously it'll be ignored by a number\nof Senators and those who decline to answer should be\nlisted in the column.\nHRH\n3/31/72\nACTION MEMO\nSecretary Rogers has suggested that for campaign purposes, our\napproach to Blacks might be most effective by going via the Black\ncelebrities who are for us. He was especially impressed with Sammy\nDavis, Jr. 's reaction to his visit to the White House and the great\nmileage we've gotten from Pearl Bailey.\nWe should be starting now, of course, to line up celebrities and put\nout some public announcements of celebrity support.\nWe also need to answer the question of who is handling sport celebrities\nat this time.\nHRH\n1/24/72"
