The list of people who have expressed\ntheir concern to me is formidable. Fred Malek, Bill Horton,\nHarry Dent, John Sears Cliff/Miller, and Jeb Magruder\nhave all volunteered their concern. It is of course\npossible to discount Sears and Magruder because they may\nprofit from a decline in Flemming's influence. But Malek,\nHorton, and Dent have nothing to gain. The points made\nagainst Flemming include:\n1) He has neither the seniority nor the tact to deal\nwith Governors, Senators, or top party people,\n2) He has a substantial adverse impact with Republican\nParty circles because of his apparently poor performance\nin the personnel spot for the first two years;\n3) He has given only general guidance to the Nixon State\nChairmen in a one to two hour meeting. He neither\nrequests nor receives written reports on their progress\nimplementing his directives,\n-2-\n4) His performance in the New Hampshire primary is\nquestionable at best. Flemming's comment that the\nPresident's low vote was attributable to ITT reached\nthe President through Dent;\n5) You may be planning on bringing in some \"heavier\"\npolitical operatives --- Bob Mardian and Jerris Leonard\nhave been mentioned - but that may not solve the\nproblem. Harry Flemming should probably leave the\nCampaign altogether.\nGS\n3/10/72\n1m"
