However, Dwight Chapin believes that when the President was speaking with Governor Reagan in an attempt to solve the Finch matter, be mentioned this item and relayed his thanks to the Governor. Larry Higby LH:pm THE WHITE HOUSE DETERMINED TO BE AN WASHINGTON ADMINISTRATIVE MARKING E.O. 12065, Section 6-102 By Emp NARD, Date 7-1-87 March 13, 1969 CONFIDENTIAL MEMORANDUM FOR JOHN BROWN SUBJECT : Ronald Reagan Ronald Reagan indicated that he was rather disturbed at the fact that he had never received a thank you for the part he played in the Campaign. Would you please check this out and see if any correspondence has been forwarded to him, or if any other things have been done? L Larry Higby Believe Chapin Presedent To didray thank at time file February 21, 1969 Dear Murray: John Whitaker and I plan to meet soon to work out the details relative to the availability of Cabinet Members for speaking engagements. As soon as we have reached agreement, I suggest that you and I sit down with John Sears to work out a schedule along the lines you suggest in your letter. Sincerely yours, Charles B. Wilkinson Special Consultant to the President Mr. Marrey Chotiner Republican National Committee 1625 Eye Street Northwest Washington, D. C. 20006 cc: H. R. Haldeman Herb Klein REPUBLICAN NATIONAL COMMITTEE 1625 EYE STREET NORTHWEST WASHINGTON, D. C. 20006 NAtional 8-6800 RAY C. BLISS CHAIRMAN February 18, 1969 Mr. Charles Wilkinson The White House Washington, D. C. Re: Speaking Engagements - Members of the Cabinet Dear Bud: When you have time, I would like to discuss with you the details of a plan of coordination for the above-mentioned subject. I understand from Bob Haldeman that the responsibility for this activity has been assigned to you for the White House staff. I would like to have the information as soon as it is available from each member of the Cabinet: 1. Date of Speaking Engagement 2. Organization 3. Place of Speaking Engagement 4. Any other pertinent information concerning it. The purpose of this is to try if possible to spread out the requests of the Cabinet members so that two or three are not in one city during one week and other sections of the country "left out in the cold." I realize, of course, that sometimes this cannot be helped, as for example when conventions of different groups are held in the same area. It is my understanding that Herb Klein has the responsibility and is handling arrangements for press conferences and television appearances for the members of the Cabinet when they are out filling speaking engagements. From the political side, I believe it highly important that we notify the State Chairman, Republican National Committeeman and Committeewoman and County Chairman in advance of the appearance of a member of the Cabinet so that they do not read about it for the first time the day after the Cabinet officer has been in their city. If at all possible, the party officials should have an opportunity to meet with the Cabinet member at either a closed or an open session. Mr. Charles Wilkinson February 18, 1969 Page 2 There may be occasions when a political meeting can be held during the same visit which will be open to the public. If it is not feasible in light of the speaking engagement to be filled by the Cabinet officer, at least a private meeting with key party officials can be arranged. This is highly important to the building and maintaining of a strong party morale looking forward to the 1970 and 1972 elections. Sincerely, Murray MMC: 1h CC: H. R.
