LH:pm MEMORANDUM THE WHITE HOUSE Call WASHINGTON Done October 21, 1969 MEMORANDUM FOR H. R. HALDEMAN FROM : LARRY HIGBY RE: Telecon with Ed Hergenrather On the call you received from Ed Hergenrather the other day, I talked to him and he relayed the following: 1. He is in the process of searching for a high level company for a top executive to become Vice President of Public Relations - salary would be between $75,000 - $100, 000 per year. 2. It is with a company that strongly backs Republican politics, but he would not name the company. 3. The gentleman need not be a PR professional at all, but will be doing a lot of speaking and top level business advising for the corporation. He will have a director of PR working under him, plus a complete staff. 4. The company is in Los Angeles. He went on to say that he knew a lot of people we tried to get to come into government probably had not come in and he was wondering if you had any suggestions, or if there was anybody here that he might talk to. Recommendation: Obviously, I could refer him to Peter Flanigan or Harry Flemming's apparatus and they could supply him with some names. I wonder if we really want to get in the business of a clearing house for Ed Hergenrather, however. I would suggest that I call him and say he can speak to Harry Flemming on the matter, that I have talked to Flemming and he's expecting his call, how- ever in the future, it will be impossible to supply this sort of information. Help someon OK but we couldn get togovt. wanted foltely MEMORANDUM THE WHITE HOUSE WASHINGTON October 20, 1969 MEMORANDUM FOR H.R. HALDEMAN FROM: LARRY HIGBY RE: Attached Memo from Harry Dent In the attached memorandum when Harry Dent is referring to White House Coordinators, he means the various political contacts he now has in different departments and agencies. Usually these people meet together with a representative from Whitaker's office, Flemming's office, Nofziger's office and Harlow's office. This particular meeting because of the fact that Ronald Reagan is speaking, Harry has asked the heads of all White House staff areas if they might like to attend, or have members of their staff attend. I doubt that you would care to attend this meeting, but perhaps you'd like to have a representative there. If so, I would suggest Ken Cole or Alex Butterfield. Please indicate your choice below: Cole Butterfield No one either or both Attachment MEMORANDUM THE WHITE HOUSE WASHINGTON or September 17, 1969 MEMORANDUM FOR H. R. HALDEMAN The attached information refers to driver's licenses. I've confirmed the fact that the Washington, D.C. driver's license would not be acceptable for a resident of Maryland. Therefore, as we discussed, you'll need to take the Maryland written driver's test and apply for the driver's license. You can apply for your driver's license at the Kensington Armory in Chevy Chase, Md. The address is: Armory Avenue & Mitchell Street. It is open during the following hours - 9:45 to 12:00 noon, 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. It is open Monday thru Friday. The telephone number 949 8157. If you will let Major Lanier when you want to go, he will phone Sgt. Shalaby and he will make sure that you're rushed through. Attached also are forms that each of you will need to fill out before taking your driver's license test. The charge for an operator's license is $7.00. Also attached is a driver's handbook to familiarize you with any of the details and traffic regulations in the state of Maryland. L Larry Attachments October 16, 1969 MEMORANDUM FOR H.R. This poll will be ready for delivery tomorrow afternoon and he will be at the RNC for most of the day. He didn't know if you were aware of the poll and thought perhaps you might want a copy of it. HALDEMAN FROM : LARRY HIGBY RE: Talking Paper on Cabinet Speaking Requests You will recall when you spoke with Herb Klein last week that a Talking Paper was included on the subject of Cabinet speaking requests. Apparently you were unable to cover this with Klein. Attached are two memoranda, one from John Whitaker and the other from Harry Dent. Basically they state that the RNC would like to take over the responsibility of handling all speaking requests other than Presidential here at the Administration. The RNC, as was indicated in the Klein paper, has had no success in working with Klein on having speaking requests fulfilled. They therefore would like to take over the administrative apparatus under Harry Dent's direction and try to get a few more speaking requests handled. Both John Whitaker and Harry Dent are in favor of this procedure. It probably needs to be worked out with Dwight Chapin thoughtas to which requests, specifically, should be referred to RNC. There may be certain categories that we wish to consider here exclusive of RNC's judgment. Recommendation: I would recommend you forward the attached memorandum at Tab A to Herb Klein requesting that he get together with Harry Dent, John Whitaker and perhaps Dwight Chapin and work out the feasibility of this program. LH:pm October 8, 1969 MEMORANDUM FOR H.R. HALD EMAN Jack Valenti's office phoned to invite both you and Mrs. Haldeman to an informal party on Saturday, October 11 at 1600 Eye Street, N.W. HALDEMAN Chuck Stuart called to report that with regard to the stamp collection gifts that are going to be sent out, a stamp on Eisenhower is going to be issued in 10 days. It will be known as a jumbo stamp and therefore will not be suitable to be in this collection. Therefore, Stuart recommends that we get the gifts that we now have out right away. He would suggest that we send the 50 Great Repub- lican sets to the 50 Nixon State Chairmen from the campaign. Agree Disagree Further he recommends that we send the 50 sets of Great Presidents to the 50 state governors. Agree Disagree Perhaps you would want to send the above to someone other than the 50 state governors since many of them are Democrats. For example, they could be sent to the 50 key people (supporters) on the ABM or appropriate members of the Nixon Foundation, etc. Larry LH:pm October 1, 1969 MEMORANDUM FOR H.R.
