Monday, August 30, 2010 Page 3 of 3 February 24, 1970 MEMORANDUM FOR H.R. HALDEMAN FROM : LARRY HIGBY Mr. John Marin called you yesterday concerning the candidacy of Dr. William McCall for Lipscomb's Congressional seat. He specifically wanted to know who you would recommend as a good thoroughly capable campaign manager to handle Dr. McCall's campaign. I checked with Murray Chotiner on this race and understand that it is quite up in the air with Pat Hillings among others being involved. Under the circumstances, I feel it would probably not be appropriate for you to be recommending campaign managers and had intimated this to Mr. Marin when he called. If you agree, I will call back and confirm the fact that you would not be in a position to recommend a campaign manager due to your position here at the White House. LH:pm February 23, 1970 MEMORANDUM FOR H. R. HALDEMAN FROM : LARRY HIGBY Timmons is speaking specifically about the idea of having Stennis, Byrd, Proxmire, et al, in to let them know that the President plans on not supporting anybody against them. LH:pm February 6, 1970 MEMORANDUM FOR H.R. HALDEMAN FROM : LARRY HIGBY SUBJECT : Suggestions for Tonight's TV Viewing CBS NEWS - Channel 2, 9, 16, 43 Special: At the LBJ Ranch in Texas, Walter Cronkite questions former President Johnson about the 1968 cessation of bombing over North Vietnam. /pm February 10, 1970 MEMORANDUM FOR H. R. HALDEMAN FROM : LARRY HIGBY Attached is a letter from Mr. Edward Reep at the California Institute of the Arts. It points out with its attachments, the destruction that is taking place with the concept originally established by Mrs. Chouinard when she set up the Institute. While I'm sure you are aware of most of this, it points out a situation that we might want to consider, should H.R. Haldeman no longer be associated with California Institute of the Arts while here at the White House. Certainly you can't spend any time in connection with it and I'm sure that the Institute would welcome you again with open arms upon leaving here. Attachment LH:pm February 9, 1970 MEMORANDUM FOR H.R. HALDEMAN FROM: LARRY HIGBY SUBJECT: Proposed Presidential Telephone Call to Robert Anderson Robert Anderson is both National Chairman from New Mexico and Chairman and Chief Executive of Atlantic Richfield Company. Mr. Dent informs me that: 1. Anderson is reached in New York more often than Philadelphia. 2. The President ought to be reminded of the conversation he had with Secretary Hickel regarding the Senate seat of Clinton Anderson of New Mexico and the possibility of Robert Anderson being appointed to this seat. Dent states that since that time, Hickel has talkedto Robert Anderson and indicates that Mr. Anderson expects the switch to take place in April or May. This points up a need that these phone calls be staffed through all proper channels, a point I have already discussed with Steve Bull. He indicates that where possible all the phone calls will be staffed. Recommendation: Under the circumstances this phone call should be sent to Dent for appropriate staffing. TELEPHONE CALL RECOMMENDATION NAME: Robert Anderson, Chairman and Chief Executive, Atlantic Richfield Company, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania RECOMMENDED BY: Peter M. Flanigan REASON: Mr. Anderson is one of the leaders in the oil industry. TALKING POINTS: 1. As National Chairman from New Mexico, Bob Anderson is the most politically aware of the major companies' chief executives. You might ask him the status of the New Mexico Senate Race. 2. You might ask him the progress of his company's exploration and development in Prudhue Bay where Atlantic Richfield has a major oil find. 3. As a result of your conversation with Secretary Hickel regarding the Senate seat currently held by Clinton Anderson, you may wish to probe Bob Anderson regarding this situation.
