Friday, July 16, 2010 Page 2 of 2 MEMORANDUM THE WHITE HOUSE WASHINGTON January 27, 1971 MEMOR ANDUM FOR : MR. CHAPIN FROM : L. HIGBY L Dole called Bob the other day concerning Ernie Minor. Apparently Ernie would like to meet with Dole - the Senator guesses to get a job at the Republican National Committee. Bob would like to get a reading from you on Ernie - his potential and whether or not he's somebody we'd want to move over there, and if so, into which area. I know you're busy so just give me a call on this one rather than dictate a reply if you would prefer. January 18, 1971 HIGH PRIORITY MEMORANDUM FOR : MURRAY CHOTINER HARRY DENT FROM : L. HIGBY Bob asked that you call those Chairmen of our key states i. e. John Andrews, and ask them what they thought about the President's speech on the "Open Door". In talking to them you should try to stress the significance of the "Open Door" remarks and the fact that we are bedoming the party of the Open Door. Also, you should ask for their reaction on the reception that the President held the other evening for Party officials and emphasize to them--and ask them in turn--to emphasize the positive tone of this gathering. LH:pm January 18, 1971 MEMORANDUM FOR: MR. HARRY DENT FROM: L. HIGBY Bob asked that I return this to you. The President has indicated to him that he does not want detailed political reports on specific states but only marginal type information. Therefore, he asked that I return this to you. LH:BK:ba January 19, 1971 MEMORANDUM FOR: FOLLOW UP FROM: LARRY HIGBY Follow up with Derge on Monday to see whether or not he has got down to Gallup or when he is going to ge see Gallup. Derge is supposed to check RED discrepancy in the Gallup polls verses the Chilton polls as a consultant to the Republican National Committee. LH:kh January 28, 1971 MEMORANDUM FOR: H. R. HALDEMAN FROM: L. HIGBY You asked that I check with Ed Morgan on Moore's specific project. Below they are listed together with his response: 1. Former Governors now in Congress -- he will have to check on this, but Timmons is handling it. 2. Former Governors throughout the country -- it is his understanding after talking with John this morning that Morgan should call Rockefeller's Aid with regard to this project and they will be sending it up. He has a call in to Rockefeller's Aid, but has been unable to reach him so far. 3. Present Governors the VP staff is working this, but he has not received a reply from them yet. 4. List of Mayors and county executives -- the Vice President staff is working on this but has not gotten anything down to him yet. I also passed on th him the fact that Rockefeller is moving ahead at a rapid rate and setting up his Citizen's operation and considering naming Scranton the head. I informed him that the President feels that Lausche or Ellington should probably be named co-Chairman along with Scranton and that some other Democrats should also be included. He took note of this information and said he would get on it. 2 Irealize that none of the information listed above is very satisfactory. but it is the best that Morgan has at this time. I will call him again this afternoon if he does not call me and get an up date for you. January 28, 1971 MEMORANDUM FOR: H. R. HALDEMAN FROM: L. January 21, 1971 MEMORANDUM FOR : ROB ODLE FROM : L. HIGBY With regard to the parchment that we want to send out to the Republican National Committee on the Open Door, the revised statement that goes to final print should read as follows: The Party of the Open Door "Our party has great principles, principles that are far b bigger than the Republican Party. They are as big as all of America itself. But our party will not grow unless it is a party of the open door, open to all people, all people who share our want to principles, who work with us for the betterment of America and the betterment of the world. Ours should be a party of the open door, open to all people, all parties, all faiths, all races. That is the kind of party that we are and that we shall be in the years ahead." From extemporaneous remarks of President Richard M. Nixon at the Dedication of the Eisenhower Republican Center, Washington, D.C. January 15, 1971.
