Friday, July 23, 2010 Page 2 of 2 July 13, 1971 ADMINISTRATIVELY CONFIDENTIAL MEMORANDUM FOR: ALEX BUTTERFIELD DWIGHT CHAPIN FROM: L. HIGBY SUBJECT: John Rollins Telephone Call or Visit Tom Evans of the RNC called Bob last evening to request a phone call be made by the President to John Rollins. The RNC is trying to get Rollins to Chair the November 9th RNC Fund Raising Dinner project. Rollins has indicated his interest in this, but has not really decided to do it, indicating to Evans that "Tom sometimes you just need to talk to the President about things like this." Rollins will be spending the week at the La Costa Country Club here in California, and Evans would either like to have the President call Rollins or preferably have Rollins come up and see the President for five minutes. Evans indicated that the call should not be one that attempts to persuade Rollins that he ought to take the job, but merely a call that says to him, "John, I understand that you are going to be playing a major role in the November 9th Dinner project, and I want you to know how great I think that is." Obviously, Evans has not thought this whole thing through completely in terms of whether the call or the visit would be best or what should be said in either case, so you will want to get back to him for details. CC: Mr. Haldeman LH:kb July 18, 1971 Dear Bill: I am sorry, but a last minute change in departure time and procedure has made it necessary for me to go directly to the airport. Therefore, I will not be able to see you this trip. I want to thank you for all your help and generosity in leeting Bob use the sail boat. He appreciated it very much. Mrs. Kathy Bachman, my secretary, will be showing you through the compound this morning, and I am sure she will be able to answer any questions you may have. I hope your wife and daughters enjoy the tour. When we are out here next time, I look forward to meeting you in person. Likewise, should you be in Washington between now and then, please do not hesitate to call me at the White House. I envy you enjoying this California weather. Best wishes, Sincerely, Larry Higby July 2, 1971 MEMORANDUM FOR: STEVE BULL FROM: L. HIGBY I am sorry to make this sound so formal, but I thought a note might be the easiest way. We'll have the need for some baby equipment, apparently, while we are out in California. That would include a crib, high chair and if possible a car seat. LH:kb July 23, 1971 MEMORANDUM FOR: DWIGHT CHAPIN FROM: L. HIGBY Haldeman talked to Senator Bob Griffin re: the invitation for the President to appear at a dinner honoring Griffin on November 6th in Detroit. It is part of a series of dinners that is a state-wide kick-off for Griffin's campaign for reelection. He feels it is very important, obviously. Bob said that there wasn't much chance that he could attend, although, he knows the President would want to. Just thought you should be aware of this call. LH:kb Chron July 22, 1971 Brother James: I want to thank you very much for taking the time to come down Saturday afternoon. I am sorry we were unable to work out something so we could spend more time together. Hopefully that can be remedied next time out. Your car was really great and has gotten me thinking about purchasing an Italian product, although Porsche still looks awfully good. Letters really aren't the way to say any- thing, so, until I am out there next time, take it easy and if you get a chance, keep an eye on Dolores. Best regards, Sincerely, Larry Higby Mr. James Eastman 202 Moonstone Manhattan Beach California LH:kb July 22, 1971 MEMORANDUM FOR: FOLLOW-UP FROM: L. HIGBY Follow-up with Gordon Strachan on some legal work he is doing for Haldeman about official Wills and places of residence, etc. LH:kb July 14, 1971 MEMORANDUM FOR: H.R. HALDEMAN FROM: L. HIGBY Finch called to report that he feels strongly that we Diego. need to give some second thoughts with regard to San When I asked him why, he gave the following reasons: 1. The Host Delegation and the Governor and his two committee men receive control of 3,000 tickets for the Convention. Finch is not sure that we want to give Reagan that much visibility. Also, he points out the fact that we will be in a running battle with Reagan as soon as he gets control of that many tickets. He will start fund raising projects, etc. 2. He feels that if we hold the Convention in Miami Beach the networks would probably anti-up more money simply because they would be saving so much money in not having to move facilities. Finch would like for you to call him to discuss this. He will be available after 1:00 this afternoon, our time. LH: lm 001 July 9, 1971 MEMORANDUM FOR: H. R. HALDEMAN FROM: L. HIGBY SUBJECT: Report on Firestone Situation I received a call from Dick Moore and he reported the following: 1. Firestone will be at the Compound today and will be having lunch with John Ehrlichman. He will have a memo for you, apparently covering the subject of his meeting with the Reagan people. 2. There will not be another meeting of the Reagan people until September 14th, and of course, Mitchell will be back by July 25th. Be will then be able to move into the whole California delegation situation. 3. The Reagan people indicated to Firestone that the AG had approved the plan of an organizing committee, but Moore says this is not the case. Moore says that there is nothing more to do on this until the AG gets back and nothing will happen on it between now and then. He just wanted you to be aware of the whole situation. LH:kb July 8, 1971 ADMINISTRATIVELY CONFIDENTIAL MEMORANDUM FOR: H. R. HALDEMAN FROM: L. HIGBY SUBJECT: Nixon Foundation Site Dwight has already passed on to you the Kalmbach information relayed yesterday. In addition, you should be aware of the fact that Irvine is coming in with its final -- final offer -- says Kalmbach, on Monday or Tuesday. After that, you probably would want to meet on the whole site question, and also consider, at least, taking a tour of the Irvine property. Kalmbach also has indicated that he would like some people from Irvine to be there when you take the tour. LH:kb
