HIGBY\nSUBJECT:\nJohn Rollins Telephone\nCall or Visit\nTom Evans of the RNC called Bob last evening to request a\nphone call be made by the President to John Rollins. The\nRNC is trying to get Rollins to Chair the November 9th RNC\nFund Raising Dinner project.\nRollins has indicated his interest in this, but has not\nreally decided to do it, indicating to Evans that \"Tom\nsometimes you just need to talk to the President about\nthings like this.\"\nRollins will be spending the week at the La Costa Country\nClub here in California, and Evans would either like to\nhave the President call Rollins or preferably have Rollins\ncome up and see the President for five minutes.\nEvans indicated that the call should not be one that\nattempts to persuade Rollins that he ought to take the job,\nbut merely a call that says to him, \"John, I understand\nthat you are going to be playing a major role in the November\n9th Dinner project, and I want you to know how great I think\nthat is.\"\nObviously, Evans has not thought this whole thing through\ncompletely in terms of whether the call or the visit would\nbe best or what should be said in either case, so you will\nwant to get back to him for details.\nCC: Mr. Haldeman\nLH:kb\nJuly 18, 1971\nDear Bill:\nI am sorry, but a last minute change in departure\ntime and procedure has made it necessary for me\nto go directly to the airport. It is\npart of a series of dinners that is a state-wide\nkick-off for Griffin's campaign for reelection. He\nfeels it is very important, obviously. Bob said\nthat there wasn't much chance that he could attend,\nalthough, he knows the President would want to. HIGBY\nFollow-up with Gordon Strachan on some legal\nwork he is doing for Haldeman about official\nWills and places of residence, etc.\nLH:kb\nJuly 14, 1971\nMEMORANDUM FOR:\nH.R. HALDEMAN\nFROM:\nL. HIGBY\nFinch called to report that he feels strongly that we\nDiego. need to give some second thoughts with regard to San\nWhen I asked him why, he gave the following reasons:\n1. The Host Delegation and the Governor and his\ntwo committee men receive control of 3,000 tickets\nfor the Convention. Finch is not sure that we\nwant to give Reagan that much visibility. Also,\nhe points out the fact that we will be in a running\nbattle with Reagan as soon as he gets control of\nthat many tickets. He will start fund raising\nprojects, etc.\n2. He feels that if we hold the Convention in Miami\nBeach the networks would probably anti-up more money\nsimply because they would be saving so much money\nin not having to move facilities.\nFinch would like for you to call him to discuss this. HIGBY\nSUBJECT:\nReport on Firestone\nSituation\nI received a call from Dick Moore and he reported\nthe following:\n1. Firestone will be at the Compound\ntoday and will be having lunch with\nJohn Ehrlichman. He will have a memo\nfor you, apparently covering the subject\nof his meeting with the Reagan people.\n2. There will not be another meeting\nof the Reagan people until September 14th,\nand of course, Mitchell will be back by\nJuly 25th. Be will then be able to move\ninto the whole California delegation\nsituation.\n3. The Reagan people indicated to\nFirestone that the AG had approved the\nplan of an organizing committee, but\nMoore says this is not the case.\nMoore says that there is nothing more to do on\nthis until the AG gets back and nothing will\nhappen on it between now and then. In addition, you should be aware of the\nfact that Irvine is coming in with its final -- final offer --\nsays Kalmbach, on Monday or Tuesday. After that, you probably\nwould want to meet on the whole site question, and also\nconsider, at least, taking a tour of the Irvine property.\nKalmbach also has indicated that he would like some people\nfrom Irvine to be there when you take the tour.\nLH:kb"
