FROM:
L. HIGBY
SUBJECT:
Tickets for "Time of Your Life"
If possible, I would very much enjoy getting a couple of tickets
to see "Time of Your Life". If this can be worked out, will you
please let me know. Perhaps we could put an evening together
with Strachan and your wife, also. I assume you will have to
work that night.

MR. FRED MALEK
FROM:

I received a call yesterday from Bill Codus over at Protocol
that you might want to follow-up on. Codus informs me that
the Washington office is looking for a young dynamic Republican
to move into the slott of Director of Public Relations for CBS's
office here in Washington. He would be working directly with
the President at CBS. Bill feels this is someone we very much
want to make sure is our man and says if we have any good
candidates, please let him know. He would like to broker this
unless there is some problem, but will take pretty much any
direction we give him.

FROM:

If you don't hear anything from me by tomorrow, will you please
follow-up directly with Mr. Haldeman Wednesday morning on what
he would like to have at the La Grande' Scene Restaurant after dinner
on Wednesday evening.
He wants one thing checked and that is -- they don't mind serving
just desert and coffee after a performance. That is no dinner and
this should be specifically understood when you ask the maitre d'
the question.

Dear Pat:
Thanks BO much for the calendar book. It
should prove to be extremely helpful with
all of the upcoming trips.
Hope you and Mary had a very enjoyable

Hope to see you soon.

To follow-up on our conversation --
Bill Kilgallon did the scheduling for the girls and Mrs. Nixon in
'68 and did a great job. Julie called Bob on this and per our
conversation, you should follow-up with Dwight first and then Bill,
to see if there would be any possibility he would be able to help out
in '72.
Please let Bob know what happens here.

I don't know if you have seen a copy of this, but these are some
notes Bob did as a result of taking the ORC data with him over
the weekend.
It might be interesting to get Benham's reaction to the things Bob
has noted since he failed to name most of them in his original
analysis. It would also be helpful to have Tom Benham review the
data from the two previous polls.
Also, you should plan on making up one of these cards everytime
we to one of these telephone polls.

Bob asked that Benham do, as soon as possible, an analysis
of the shifts involved in the demographics for the last four or
five polls in the trial heat areas. What we would like Benham
to do here is look for something a little more subtle than just
the numbers which will be pretty obvious as soon as you do the
necessary charts and what the reasoning is behind the shifts.

Some questions it might be interesting to find the answer to with
regard to the poll today --
-- On the Trial Heats are the same people voting for us each
time when it is Muskie and Kennedy. We get 52% on both. Also
how similar are the the constituentses between Muside and Kennedy
with their 36 and 41. It appears that Wallace hurts us more than he
does either Kennedy or Muskle. Where does Wallace hurt us more --
south or north or with a particular age group or what? Realistically
the 2% increase over our ORC November poll is statistically insignificant.
I assume you are finding out the shift here.
-- With regard to question #2. We have to get a four-way break here
rather than just the two-way.
-- Question #3 doesn't really tell us very much except there has been
a small upsurge in support of Vietnam. Where did it occur.
-- Question #4 is very disturbing in that we have dropped a total of
eight points here. It would be interesting to break question #4 against
Question #1 to find out what our supporters are thinking.
-- With regard to Question #9 it would be interesting to see if the 34%
that don't think we did a good job on the speech are the same 34% who
don't approve us.
-- Also, is there anybody who is in the 17% on Question #10 who is not
in the 34% on Question #9.
-- Who makes up the 46% on Question #11 that we are having problems
with. How many are the same people on Question #9 and how many of
these are the same people who disapprove us?
2
054
-- How many on Question #12 in the 38% are the same people who
disapprove of the President?

Question. What are we telling our speakerbs to say when they

The attached is something that was obviously bungled from the
start -- almost the finish. Please get to the bottom of it.
1. Find out when we first knew something was going
to be happening here;
2. Find out when Porter first knew something was
going to be happening here, and;
3. see where the breakdown was.
It is ridiculous to ask the President to do something like this on
the day of an event and expect much chance of getting him to do it.
The chlebrities are people who we are trying to get on our side and
by the way they were handled, I doubt it contributed very heavily to
getting this done.
Was the hangup on our part, i.e., did Parker not process this fast
enough or did Porter just fail to notify us? I want to know names,
particulars and dates. I want to use this as a case to make a point.

There is a new book out by someone named James David

character is the most important inilicator of how a President
will perform. Get a copy of the book. It is mentioned this
week in the Hugh Sidey column. If you can't find the book, call

During our next poll, Bob would like the question asked that proceeds
something as follows: "Of all of the candidates in either party of this
list -- which one do you think would make the best President?"
In one of the recent books Bob has been reading, is the election of 1948.
There was an indication that in the Spring of '48 when a question like this
was asked, Dwight Eisenhower received 24% of the vote, Truman received
11%. Is there a trend on this question anywhere? The list should include
all three Republican candidates and all six Democratic candidates.
