Monday, November 22, 2010 Page 2 of 2 December 1, 1972 MEMORANDUM FOR: TERRY O'D ONNELL FROM: L. HIGBY The check that I asked be delivered immediately to Mr. Haldeman's residence from the Young Voters Association did not arrive at Haldeman's until that evening when we went home. You've got to follow-up on these things. LH:dg December 3, 1972 MEMORANDUM FOR: GORDON STRACHAN FROM: L. HIGBY As I discussed with you on the phone, we need to give some consideration to developing a poll that tests the general feelings people have with regard to images of party, etc. For example, how many people now tend to consider themselves Republicans, Democrats, Independents? What do these parties stand for in their minds? What are people's general feelings about parties, why is there a trend toward Independents? Do people feel it's time for the formation of a new party? How would they feel is the best way to go about the formation of a new party, etc. ? In addition, we should take a look at our pre-election data and try to get what information we can out of that as to what people identify themselves with in terms of Republican, Democrat. One way to do this also would be to divide it up between the pre-September data and the post-September data and compare this. Another thing to do would be chart the trends on Republican, Democrat, Independent over the last year from our data. It's important here we use the raw data since the weighted data would reflect a different situation. LH:dg December 20, 1972 ADMINISTRATIVELY CONFIDENTIAL/EYES ONLY MEMORANDUM FOR: BILL TIMMONS FROM: L. HIGBY It should be clearly understood that the President will not attend the March 28 Republican Dinner in Washington, D.C. unless there's been a change in the Congressional Campaign Committee Chairman. It is Maury Stans' understanding now that Bob Wilson is going to continue in that post and that he will be running unopposed. This is, as you can imagine, a matter of considerable concern. On another point, are we doing everything we can to develop good positive Congressional reaction to the Bush appointment to the RNC? Apparently, there was something in the news summary today about some Gongressmen being upset about it. Just for your information, the President called Senator Biden about his wife's accident. bee: Dave Parker December 14, 1972 MEMORANDUM FOR # BILL TIMMONS FROM I L. HIGBY On stuff like the attached, please send it to Alex Butterfield or the Staff Secretary to get it appropriately handled. You'll get a response a lot quicker and we can be far more helpful in getting the project carried out. Attachment LH:pm THE WHITE HOUSE WASHINGTON Mr. President: Re the attached memorandum -- Would you like to have the 1, 000 records to give at Christmas -- or before so that people might enjoy the music prior to Christmas ? YES NO, THANKS good 12/12/72 rmwoods one togeah celebrity lague THE WHITE HOUSE WASHINGTON December 7, 1972 ADMINISTRATIVELY CONFIDENTIAL MEMORANDUM FOR: ROSE WOODS THROUGH: WILLIAM E. TIMMONS for FROM: TOM C. KOROLOGOS TK SUBJECT: Mormon Tabernacle Choir Records Isaac M. Stewart, President of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir out in Salt Lake City, Utah, called me to say that he would like to make a personal gift to the President of 1, 000 records of the Choir with Eugene Ormandy and the Philadelphia Orchestra singing the Messiah. Mr. Stewart said that perhaps the President might want to use the records as a possible Christmas gift to Members of Congress, Diplomatic Corps, friends or whatever. Mr. Stewart, whom the President has met during those times he has spoken out in the Mormon Tabernacle with the Choir singing in the background, said that he would like to make the records available without fanfare or publicity and, "nobody need know where they came from". (He doesn't even want to make the presentation personally). I would appreciate your guidance on what to tell Mr. Stewart. Thanks, Rose. ADMINISTRATIVELY CONFIDENTIAL EYES ONLY December 5, 1972 MEMORANDUM FOR I BILL TIMMONS FROM I L, HIGBY Please be sure that you get to Bud Brown on the record and the selling points that Colson is putting together regarding all the things that the President did for the Congressional candidates -- the pictures, letters, phone calls, films, etc. This case has still not been made and Brown, in his new role, would be a good one to help us make it. This material also should be gotten to Brock, Ford and Scott and we've got to push again for an aggressive program of getting across the President's side of the story of the things he did do to help Congressional and Senatorial campaigns rather than letting the myth ride that he did nothing. Clark MacGregor, and John Mitchell should both be actively involved in getting this across in the most visible possible way. LH:pm December 18, 1972 MEMORANDUM FOR : RON ZIEGLER FROM : L. HIGBY Any time you could forward the money for the tennis it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. LH:pm
