HALDEMAN\nTom Evans (of the RNC) has indicated that he badly\nwants Darrell Trent as his Deputy Chairman for\nAdministration and that, with a nudge from us, Trent\nwould make this move. What is required is some\nindication by us that we \"need\" Trent to do this and\nthat it is an important job.\nWould you please give Trent a call and see what you\ncan do to induce him to take this position?\nHRH:BK:kb\nFebruary 24, 1971\nMEMORANDUM FOR H. R. HALDEMAN\nFROM :\nBRUCE KEHRLI\nSUBJECT :\nYour Meeting with Dole\nand the Attorney General\nAs you know Chuck Colson is working on a project to nail\nthe \"Muskie Moderate\" myth. This is something that will\nbe master-minded here but will be implemented at the RNC.\nBob Dole is to be our big gun on this and Muskie is to be\nhis principal assignment. Colson has responsibility for this\nproject and to lay some ground work, you might tell Dole\nof Chuck's responsibility and that the two of them should get\ntogether in the very near future.\nAlso, Lyn Nofziger called to ask you to re-emphasize the point\nthat Dole is to be tougher and less \"statesmanlike\".\nBK:pm\nFebruary 22, 1971\nMEMORANDUM FOR:\nH. R. HALDEMAN\nFROM:\nBRUCE KEHRLI\nSUBJECT:\nInformation from the RNC\nWe are receiving quite a bit of information from the RNC\nResearch Division. We receive a packet about every three\ndays. The subjects covered include summaries of recent\npolls and information on possible Democrat candidates\nfor 1972. Since each of these packets is quite lengthly\n(approximately fifteen pages) I am forwarding them to\nGordon Strachan for his review and he will bring to your\nattention any information you need to know.\nFor your information, I have attached a couple of sample\nreports.\nAttachment\nBK:kb\nFebruary 20, 1971\nMEMORANDUM FOR:\nH. HALDEMAN\nFROM:\nBRUCE KEHRLI\nSUBJECT:\nMailing of Parchment Certificates to\nRepublican winning and losing Candidates\nin the 1970 Election\nJust after the election last year, Bill Safire came up with the idea\nof sending Presidential momentos in the form of a parchment\ncertificate to the winners and losers in the November elections.\nThese were to be sent to all Republican candidates down to the\nstate level -- that is, all candidates involved in state-wide races.\nAt that time the attached certificates were approved, but certified\nlists of all state candidates were not available. Rather than\nrun the risk of sending the wrong certificate to some of the candidates,\nyou indicated that we should delay the mailing until certified results\nwere available.\nThese lists are now available at the state level and each state\nchairman has been requested to forward the appropriate information.\nThe mailing labels are ready for the participants in the Congressional,\nSenatorial, and Gubernatorial races and as we receive the information\non State Legislatures and state-wide races (Lt. Governors,\nSecretary of States, Supreme Court, where applicable) these too\nwill be made up and the complete mailing will be sent out at one\ntime.\nThe purpose of this memo is to keep you advised of the status\nof this job and to let you know that unless you have any objections\nthese certificates will be printed and mailed.\nBK:kb:ba\nFebruary 23, 1971\nMEMORANDUM FOR:\nJEB MAGRUDER\nFROM:\nH.
