Friday, February 11, 2011 Page 2 of 2 ADMINISTRATIVELY CONFIDENTIAL November 14, 1972 MEMORANDUM FOR: BILL RHATICAN ROLAND ELLIOTT FROM: GORDON STRACHAN SUBJECT: Letters to New American Majority As we discussed on the telephone, you should move off quickly on the project of reviewing all 7,000 incoming wires and letters of gongratulations to the President. The goal is to find the New American Majority types, which should be sorted out as Democrats, Labor people, Ethnics, etc. Roland, you should have the materials collected and assembled so that Colson's group of Rhatican, Balzano, Rogers, and Gardner can go through them quickly and make suggestions as to the type of special reply letters. They should not receive the routine sard acknowledgement. Bill, in addition to having your group go through the Elliott-collected materials, you should get from your group suggestions as to others the President might write. This project should receive top priority because the Elliott-approved draft and a Colson-approved plan of the numbers and tone of the message must be sent to Camp David on Friday, November 17. Please call me if there are any problems in completing this project. Thank you. Due Date: November 17 GS/jb THE WHITE HOUSE WASHINGTON November 13, 1972 MEMORANDUM FOR : GORDON STRACHAN FROM : L. HIGBY We need to set up a system right away so someone with political knowledge is examining all the incoming wires and letters of con- gratulations to the President. The New Majority-types should be sorted out such as Democrats, Labor people, Ethnics, etc. Special reply forms should be prepared for those and they should not just receive a routine card acknowledgment. There should be a letter from the President and the President wants to see a draft of these before they are sent out. This should be done in the next couple of days. Bob feels we should pull Don Rogers, Mike Balsano, Mickey Gardner, as well as Colson into this project to get it done. Also if there is anybody over at 1701 who could be helpful along these lines, he should be included. Please give this project top priority. Fll,1/20 ADMINISTRATIVELY CONFIDENTIAL November 16, 1972 MEMORANDUM FOR: ROLAND ELLIOTT FROM: GORDON STRACHAN SUBJECT: Finance Letters I reviewed with Mr. Stans the draft letter from the President to the campaign contributors. He suggested some changes: 1) Drop the third paragraph (I hope I soon will have the opportunity to thank you personally for your support.) because the President will, in fact, probably only have an opportunity to thank personally the top 100 contributors; 2) Those who contributed $1,000 and up will receive the text of the letter excluding the third paragraph. This amounts to 5,000-6,000 people; 3) For the top 100 contributors, the only personalized note which Mr. Stans believes appropriate would be to include the third paragraph and include the addressee's first name in that third paragraph so that it would read for example, "I hope, John, that I will soon have the opportunity to thank you personally for your support"; 4) The contributors from $100 to $999 would receive the photograph. Mr. Stans estimates that this will be approximately 2,500. This list will be more difficult for them to acquire off the computer; however, he hopes to have this list to you by the end of the month; 5) The top 100 contributors Ken Talmage has and will deliver to me almost immediately. I will then review the list and the first name designations with you. - 2 - FU/11/20 You may also want to check Ray about the use of the word "help" in the first two paragraphs. Mr. Stans suggests that "important assistance" replace "help" in the second paragraph. If you have any questions, please call me so that we can keep this project moving quickly. GS/jb ADMINISTRATIVELY CONFIDENTIAL November 14, 1972 MEMORANDUM FOR: FOLLOW UP FROM: GORDON STRACHAN On Friday, November 17, check for the wrap-up reports from Malek and Magruder and determine which items Ed Cox would like to review. Also check for Stan Anderson's Congressional race memorandum as part of his final wrap-up. Submit all these materials to Bob on Friday with a cover memorandum. GS/jb ADMINISTRATIVELY CONFIDENTIAL November 30, 1972 MEMORANDUM FOR: LARRY HIGBY FROM: GORDON STRACHAN SUBJECT: Eleanor Williams I talked with Jerry Jones about replacing Eleanor Williams at the RNC. Jones is in complete agreement and as the staff man for Malek on the RNC will see that it is done. However, Malek called you this morning somewhat perplexed by the Dole story on page 1 of the Post. That directly influences the choice of the two deputies under Bush, so Malek and Jones are at a loss as to how to move Eleanor Williams out right now. GS/jb
