ADMINISTRATIVELY CONFIDENTIAL
July 17, 1972
MEMORANDUM FOR:
FRED MALEK
FROM:
GORDON STRACHAN
SUBJECT:
RNC Convention Delegates
I have just read Stan Anderson's memorandum of July 14
regarding the percentages based on 279 delegates out of
the 1,347. In my opinion, this is an impending disaster
which we must change quickly or the media will tear us
apart. As we have discussed, I do not think there will
be any problem getting our old line delegates to accept
honorary positions so that we can fill the "real delegate
slots" with the proportions we want. If Reagan, Rocke-
feller, Javits, Buckley, and most of the California fat
cats will accept honorary positions, let's do that with
the other key states. It is ridiculous to have only 2%
Jewish representation when we hope this time to receive
substantial Jewish support. I understand the problems
about not having the results from California and Texas,
but we must move on this quickly.
I would like to be able to solve this problem without
involving Bob either by memorandum or meeting. However,
with all the effort that Timmons and Chapin and others
are putting in on the appearance aspect of the Convention
for the media, this has to be a top priority project. Just
give me a call if you want me to do anything to push this
matter to solution.

MEMORANDUM FOR:
H. R. HALDEMAN
FROM:
DWIGHT L. CHAPIN
SUBJECT:
Republican Convention
One of the big problems we are going to have at the Republican
Convention is to keep the television cameras centered on our
program from the platform. In other words, we are going to
stage our events in such a way as to know that the best television
and the television that we want on the air is going to come from
the podium.
It would seem that about halfway into the Democratic Convention,
it might be a good idea to start a telephone campaign to the
networks via Joe Citizen asking the networks why they keep
spotlighting everything except what's happening on the podium.
Say that they are distressed because the coverage the network
is offering does not focus on the actual proceedings. If they
are going to cover an event, then they should cover it
accurately and portray what's happening from the podium and
not try to create stories of their own. I see us putting calls
in to the network as well as getting letters written, etc.
If you agree with this plan, I will see that it is executed via
Colson's operation with Mitchell's approval.

SUBJECT:

Host Committee
The purpose of a Miami Host Committee for the Re-Elect
Committee is to add prestige to our Convention effort, allow
locals to participate and most importantly open doors for us
(private homes, boats, etc).
You had earlier voiced no objection to J. Deering Danielson
as Host Chairman. Attached is his list of Committee members
he recommends. While he has not contacted them yet, he is
eager to do SO. Therefore, I'll appreciate your clearance or
rejection of the names as soon as possible.
Bebc Rebozo objected to L. Allen Morris and Mrs. Herbert
Hoover but cleared the rest. However, he wants several Cubans
on the Host Committee and suggests Danielson consult with
Dr. Edgardo Buttari for names. Buttari is "Hatched" SO cannot
himself serve.
There are no Blacks on the list and I asked Danielson about the
omission. He said there just are no Black leaders -- other than
a couple of Uncle Toms who could add to the Committee. In
light of the caliber of these individuals I do not think the absence
is overly significant. Rebozo concurs.
