HALDEMAN FROM: HERBERT G. KLEIN RE: Mr. Higby's request of February 8 I would list the ten most powerful columnists who "aren't against us" as follows: James J. Kilpatrick Joseph Alsop William S. White C. L. Sulzberger Richard Wilson Kevin Phillips William F. Buckley David Broder David Lawrence Roscoe Drummond I would add six more who while perhaps not as powerful, count a great deal: Crosby Noyes Alan Otten Richard Chamberlain Nick Thimmesch Holmes Alexander Jerry Greene The question of the six "most powerful national TV commentators who are "for us" is more difficult. It depends on how you define commentator. I would include the following: Howard K. Smith Herb Kaplow Walter Cronkite (neutral) Peter Hackes Merv Griffin William F. Buckley There are also several favorable commentators on a regional basis such as George Putnam, KTTV and Bob Abernathy, NBC in Los Angeles.
