MEMORANDUM FOR :
HERB KLEIN
FROM :
H.R. HALDEMAN
H
SUBJECT :
Lee Hills
The President commented after the Knight breakfast
that Lee Hills is the most powerful man in the
Knight chain and that we should be consistently
cultivating him on an ongoing basis.
Along the same line we should develop some intelli-
gence as to who the key man is in Scripps-Howard
and also in Newhouse. Perhaps also in the Chandler
papers, but there we probably have to get to Otis
because he will undoubtedly be the key.
In any event, he wants to be sure we are really
working on these major chains on a continuing basis.
I know you are-but I think it would probably be
good to keep the President posted from time to time
on specific comments you pick up from these people,
as you have been doing.

MEMORANDUM FOR H. R. HALDEMAN
FROM:
HERBERT G. KLEIN
In response to your memorandum of December 1 regarding the San
Diego convention, I think that someone misquoted to you my state-
ment to indicate that I had anid the Sheraton Corporation was giving
any money to the RNC.
The fact is that I believe what I said helped nip in the bud what could
have been a story of highly negative quality on a national basis. You
will note that there had been nothing said since that time, despite the
major spread in the Star prior to my comment. The earlier story was
by Robert Walters in a dispatch from San Diego. In anticipation of the
questions from reporters, I had prepared for this by consulting with the
Attorney General and the San Diego Committee.
No on e had previously discussed checking comment with Jeb Magruder
or Bill Timmons, although both Bill and Jeb and I keep in very close
touch on this. Jeb and keep track of other campaign plans on a regular
basis, as well as convention arrangements.
I discussed my answer to the question with Dick Herman, and he felt
that the two statements were highly compatable from each of our views.
As Arrangements Chairman, he was not familiar with the details of the
San Diego Committee and should not be. As someone who is actively
identified with San Diego, it would be hard for me not to be aware of a story
which not only appeared in the Star, but which had been reported numerous
times prior to the date of the convention bid in Denver. We agreed on the
merit of this approach on a dual basis and the continued need for coordination.
I am enclosing a copy of the story which I think you will see reads differently
from the quote which was given to you.
