As you know, there is substantial tension between the Seattle/King County group and the State Chairman/Evans/ Gorton group. With Pelly running for re-election this year, and no other candidate in sight, I think it would be very wrong to cut him out of this picture so decisively at this point. Besides a fundamental reluctance to do any- thing to subvert the campaign of an incumbent Republican, I don't think we gain anything at this stage by hinting at a weakening of our support for Tom Pelly. Accordingly, I would try to add some of Johnson's people recommended by the Patronage Committee on a gradually increas- ing basis. If Johnson wants to shoot it out, I think he ought to start on Pelly, not us. Incidentally, I have been apprised of a movement to get another young Republican candidate to oppose Pelly this year. There are some young turk types who don't think he is serving his district or the state well, and they would like some new blood. When I get the name, I'll pass it on to you.
