Before setting\nforth my reasons for leaving the organization, let me\nurge you please not to take any action with regard to\nPeter Gonzals' early out. To do so would create unnecessary\nconfusion. The advisory board is aware of the problems\nand has taken steps to see that they are corrected.\nPete Gonzals is still National Director of YARA. While\nhe doesn't have much voice in the operation of the organ-\nization, I'm still convinced that his motives are good\nand that he would like to see YARA become a viable\norganization. I personally have my doubts as to whether\nit ever will with Sam Howlett, the National Coordinator,\nholding the reins.\nSam is extremely shrewd and he is more adept at\nmotivating people than anyone I've ever seen. He has a\ntremendous amount of potential for good, but it became\nincreasingly obvious to me and others who observed him\nclosely that the success of YARA was more important to\nthe future of Sam than the future of the country. When I\nwent with the organization fulltime I discovered that quite\na number of things were taking place which were incongruous\nwith the stated aims of the organization -- financial\nirresponsibility, misrepresentations about what the organ-\nization was accomplishing and planned to accomplish, laxity\non appointments with very important people, and a shocking\namount of callousness toward people who had done the most\nfor the organization.\nAll of this remained pretty well camouflaged until\nmy girlfriend (Lillian Cox), the secretary (Peggy Butler) and\nI decided around the first part of February that we could\nnot in good conscience remain a part of YARA. It was quite\na painful departure as we all were very much committed to\nthe concept. However, I felt an obligation to make certain\npeople who had lent their support to YARA on the basis of my\nappeal know about my decision. In most cases I simply advised\nthem of my disassociation. With Jon Rose and the most active\n- 2 -\nmembers of the advisory board (primarily Del Smith, my former\nboss), I went into much more detail. Subsequently the\nadvisory board insisted on an accounting. At a meeting a\ncouple of weeks ago members of the advisory board made it\nclear that they would be keeping much closer tabs on the\norganization.\nBud, I apologize for not having advised you before\nnow about these developments. However, it really didn't\nseem necessary since your involvement was more with Pete\nGonzals' situation, and his status with YARA hasn't actually\nchanged. As far as the organization itself is concerned,\nthere is still some hope on the part of certain members of\nthe advisory board that with major changes it can still be\na useful instrument.\nThank you for your help several months ago. I'm\nreally sorry I don't have better news about the organization."
