Dear Mrs. Gordon:
When you called me the other day to ask for names of
labor leaders who supported Republican candidates in Oklahoma,
I'm afraid I was a bit st rt with you. Labor leaders are very
strong against the Republican Party and probably always will be.
We are starting to gain among the rank and file but not at the
top and I see no need to wine and dine them.
We have a real problem here in Oklahoma with a group
of men who have always strongly supported the Republicans. This
is the oilmen. They are very upset with President Nixon, and I
don't blame them. Our own Senator Henry Bellmon spoke out against
the President in this matter. This group needs to be wined and
dined, and listened to, by the President if we are to hope for
anywhere close to the financial and personal support success we
enjoyed in 1968.
For this reason I am enclosing a list of oilmen in
Oklahoma who have been active as oilmen and active as contribu-
tors and/or workers for the Republican Party. I hope the Presi-
dent will see fit to invite these men to the White House or
arrange a meeting here in Oklahoma to talk to them and let them
talk to him.
We need something like this soon.
