INFORMATION THE WHITE HOUSE WASHINGTON January 8, 1973 ADMINISTRATIVELY CONFIDENTIAL MEMORANDUM FOR THE PRESIDENT FROM: WILLIAM E. TIMMONS SUBJECT: House Campaign Chairman Rep. Jerry Ford (R-Mich) reported today that the House Republican Campaign Committee will meet later this week and re-elect Bob Wilson its chairman. Wilson will then name Clarence "Bud" Brown as Director of Candidate Recruitment. If all goes according to Jerry's plan, Wilson will step aside on March 25th and Brown will be elected chairman. This, they hope, can be publicly announced at the Senate-House fund-raising dinner at the Washington Hilton on March 28th. Apparently all principals have agreed to this arrangement to save a bloody fight between Brown and Wilson. However, I stand Dan Kuykendall does not like the "deal. 11 Frankly, I am disappointed that Bud Brown, after a good start Bill under- with contacts and vote counts, did not go ahead and force a show- down with Wilson. Even if he'd lost it would have demonstrated personal "guts" necessary to do the things the Committee must do to be successful. but Preservation Copy
