Frankly I want to reveiw with Knight his organization's direction of the Philadelphia newspapers. I am also enclosing a column on Clement Stone that may not have come to your attention. Cordially, Walter Annenberg Ambassador Enclosures Miss Rose Mary Woods, Secretary to the President, The White House. Spl, September 27, 1972 Dear Mr. Ambassador: While this note will not be typed up until I get back to the office, I am trying to catch up on my correspondence during our flight from New York to California. Last night the President addressed the New York Victory '72 Dinner (which was carried on closed circuit television to 26 other dinners) and now tonight he will address the one in Los Angeles -- with a stop in San Francisco for their fund-raising luncheon on the way! I couldn't agree more with your comments concerning our problem wife and wish there were some way to effectively carry out your suggestion. I know John is doing his very best! With warm personal regards to you and Lee, Sincerely, Rose Mary Woods Secretary to the President The Honorable Walter H. Annenberg American Ambassador London RMW:MA:mcp WALTER H. ANNENBERG September 15, 1972 Dear Rose Mary: I enclose clippings that underscore the fear I indicated in my last letter to you on the subject of Martha Mitchell. Publicity leukemia is incurable, and this poor soul is capable of trying to implicate the President in plotting against her, so as to pro- duce sensational media coverage, and this can occur any time up to the date of election. While I respect John Mitchell's affection for his wife, I think he has a duty to the President to effectively muzzle her. Cordially, Walter Annenberg Ambassador Enclosures: 1. "Mrs. Mitchell to Write Book", from the Paris edition of the Herald Tribune, 9-15-72. 2. "Martha sets record straight", from the Stars and Stripes, 9-15-72. Miss Rose Mary Woods, Secretary to the President, The White House, Washington, D.C. November 8, 1972 MEMORANDUM TO: Bob Haldeman Rose fee FROM: Rose Mary Woods Ambassador Walter Annenberg called to say how thrilled he is - what an immense personal tribute to the President that vote was- a magnificent personal triumph. He said he is going back to London on Friday morning. Wanted to ask a favor: If it is at all possible he would like to fly down to Florida tomorrow and shake his hand -- he does not want to visit with him -- just shake hands says this is such a highly emotional triumph, etc. I told him I did not know what the schedule was but I knew his family were going with them and that David had only the one day to be with them -- but that you would know what else might be scheduled, Would you please have someone call and let the Ambassador know or maybe if you have the time it might be a good idea if you could call personally.
