February 22, 1971
Dear Bob:
Since our phone conversation of a couple of weeks ago
regarding my participation in the writing of the
Gridiron speech for Senator Dole, my schedule has been
shot to hell. As a result, I must level with you at
this point so that you can replace whatever contribution
I might have made to the speech.
Very briefly, as I told you on the phone, I am producing
the Grammy Award Show, a 90 minute Special which will be
telecast live on March 16, 1971. This whole project has
turned into a fiasco, and except that I have signed
contracts I would leave the whole mess. I must tell you
the young people who are selling the records today are
the most unreliable group of performers with whom I have
ever dealt and it has become impossible to keep the show
together. Yet, it must be done.
In addition, I am now forced to make a tour through
Nashville, Atlanta, New York and Chicago to meet with the
various record companies in a last ditch effort to pull
some cooperation out of them and guarantee not only the
appearance of their record artists but the conduct of
their artists as well.
As I indicated above, the show is live and the risks
increase every day.
I have spelled out my problems hoping you will understand
that I am boxed in. I wish it were different. You
know how I like to participate in these things. But from
now through March 16th I am afraid I am dead.
Warmest regards,
The Honorable Robert H. Finch
