Dear Lester:
It was kind and thoughtful of you to write me from
Atlantic City while you were attending the Elk's Conven-
tion. My heart attack prevented me from going there and
I was very disappointed.
I made my first visit to the Grand Lodge Convention in
1918 -- that was during the war and I attended three con-
secutive Conventions in that City and a number of them in
the years that followed. I still think it is the best
City in the United States, outside of San Francisco, for
any kind of Convention.
I had a complete report of the proceedings from Brian
McKeogh who is very active and on the staff of the National
organization, and he told me about the fight on the at-
tempt of the management of the rules to permit the election
of other than white people as members of the Order.
I suppose that will come up at every Convention, but I
noticed the decision of the Supreme Court which showed that
the Elk's Order and other Fraternal organizations would not
be hurt by their failure to admit any one other than white
people to their membership.

I note what you had to say about the Convention in Miami
and I agree with your observations. It was one of the
worse Democratic Conventions I ever saw and it cannot help
but have a detrimental effect on the Party's success in
November.
I hope that you and your wife are enjoying good health and
that one of these days our paths will cross.
Sincerely,
Jines James 4. Farley

Otherwise, please throq it away
I know it is too damn long
I ka

enough and devoted enough by kk now to be
frank, candid and no bullshit
I will love
you forever regardless of what your HONEST
judgement is
---r.e.
this keakk letter or
anything else --- because I (1) repect your
brain and judgement, and (2) am positive

with relation to me that isn't honest, for my
benefit and TRUE
That I love (and admire)
