JOHN REAGAN McCRARY
October 27, 1971
Dear Tiger:
Certainly you have heard about the attached series of articles
on Bebe; perhaps you have not seen the whole series, in the
form that is being very widely circulated now by Newsday.
Please note your name in the middle of it all
I hope several questions have been asked and satisfactorily
answered for your Boss by now:
1. At what point did somebody know the series was in preparation?
2. What efforts were made to evaluate the impact of the articles,
and their intent?
3. What written measures were presented for discussion and
decision on tactics for dilution insulation, or reply and rebuttal?
4. Did anybody ever. early or late, call up Otis Chandler to ask,
"what the hell goes on with your goons on Newsday ?"
5. How closely did the G-2 conform to the final articles ?
6. Are any related "time-bombs" still ticking ?
Those were the questions I once put to Jim Hagerty when I
warned him in Denver that the stuff was about to break on your
Boss' special fund in 1952.
Those were the questions I put to Jim Hagerty again when I
warned him about Sherman Adams-Goldfine story coming up.
In both cases, Hagerty shrugged off the warnings -- until after
they exploded.
In war and politics, G-3 never has a chance without G-2.
