SMITH WOODSTOCK ROAD GATES MILLS, OHIO 44040 August 2, 1973 The President The White House Washington, D. C. Dear Mr. President: Thank you for your friendship evidenced by inviting me to join you for a short discussion after dinner Tuesday evening. In our talk I reflected the concern of many of your friends: that the news media seems to put distortions and misrepresentations on your every pronouncement, creating festering wounds that need to be healed. I wanted to suggest an agency through which this healing could take place. Of all the news media agencies, the one that has seemed to give you the fairest and most unbiased press has been the Christian Science Monitor. I know the editor, John Hughes, personally. I asked him if he was sympathetic with this "healing" objective. He assured me that he was and would be willing to go to Washington and work confidential- 1y with you. It seemed to me very important that copyrighted copy, published identically as released, would be given world- wide publication through syndicated news service to 180 news- papers. We, who know you, are aware that you work closely with principle. There should be a way to make this understanding of you more widespread. Sincerely, Kent Kent H. Smith
