Between health problems and current events, time just whoopsed - but you were and have been very such in mind; had we a tie-line, 1'd have called several times in interim . forgive de please? Glad 1. recall Aungshola as we knew it in loving hands of founder Kramer, and do hope the puppets, props, settings etc of full production are found and put in proper hands for posterity and setivity within a museum. The encl from "rancis conjured fond membries of Chicago, people & kichigan Ave from Library to Drake; he'll have to tall the full saga of Jennie and how much a part of Chicago she really was - he's full of such happy surprises. (es, oy "on the boards" I did mean broadway production, but an "act of God" for my potential star-team (1 hope) changes the timing of planned confection; a three act, 1 set-1 set piece, costume piece set in Marie 1830-38 blending 20th century history & 2 romances into 8 charm & libel-proof clime for four characters - a star package that should have a Valentine Day opening here . 1 don't call sentiment "nostalgia" but fully believe Broadway needs it; also have a book musical to follow that means "STAR"pkg with "opportunity" to top talent, preferably already A&A - and the one mentioned to you at lunch that 1 fondly term "my Disney opera" adding a new dimension to theater and giving full chance to new talent of-all ages but certainly the young - and we will NOT USE new culture-concrete on road, but will use National in DC, Fisher in Detroit, and, if feasible in Ohgo, The Oriental- you need theaters' it's a shame that the project (of which I gave you a detailed presentation) to create "instant theater/culture/glamor" at the water Tower couldn't be, out 1 wasn't about to build on marsh what required bedrook; 3 theaters plus parking under and full pertinent office above meaning heavy machinery - the foundation was literally non-existent to bear such traffic, and my intent was to entertain, not to entomb - no "instant Aida "ct 4" for audiences! However, the education I gained from the decade of endeavor is tremendous and seems suddenly to have a touch of "breed cast on the waters" for me; if and when there's more on that, shall notify pronto. I wish that The Post here would carry the noscoe Drummond column; do you stil have it in Chgo Today? I miss its provocetive excellence; he makes you think whether or not in agreement. Can't think why WVB Schiff doesn't carry this occurr with the otherwise full smorgasbord she offers, and hope she will. for the sake of USA, Empire State and Broadway proper, those I wish had just never been born are: Nelson Nockefeller, -11100 Richardson, George meany, Henry Kissinger and noger stevens; Stevens 1 could do something to curb if I were on the board of our National (I won't call it Kennedy) Center - he does all his real work acress the street from me here: selecting vehicles, all the basic contracting, casting, production staff, union contracts etc and doesn't give R d-mn how he squanders the taxpayers money or mutilatessp a production; then, after making a real-estate pkg/amateur night presentation, whimpers at rejection of box-office - he should have someone on board NOT rubber-stemp ass-kissing him, but it's unlikely l'll be appointed to 80 challenge him. An 80 - trust this finds you in best & continued health & happiness, and even possibly pending a trip here? If so, 212-01 5-6090 . do write- Lynne Grey- AISLE COPY 203 N wabash Avenue NN -#1804 Chicago, July 25, 1960 Chicago, Illinois 60601 2 February 1971 Tuesday AM WEEKLY PRESS ROW 5 GOOD ALL SESSIONS Chairman & Mrs. Robert J Dole 6136 Beachway Drive MEZZANINE Falls Church, Va 22041 Thruston " Morton SEAT AIRNAN REPUBLICAN NATIONAL COMMITTEE 20 60-One Hundred Years of Progress-1960 Dear Chairman & Mrs. Dole: 12345 On 14 September '70 Monday PM, when Senator Dole was told with enthusiasm, "You should be our National Chair- man", he answered Pete Dodd (who is now campaigning for President of Cook YR) "Couldn't happen in a million years!" Having jumped that time gap in four months, may I urge with heartfelt con- gratulations that you have the pending/possible appointment of Ray Page to Regional Director of Education of HEW District Five held in abeyance until you find it feasible to be in Chicago to peruse and hear pertinent data that could hurt "Nixon "72" in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio and Wisconsin if Page is appointed? I ask this of the man whose handshake, as he noted my expert rifleman medal (for which I did the shooting in service), was that of an honored ex-platoon leader of 5g years active service in ETW-WW2, who resumed civilian activity professional and civio via his own shingle, plus Kiwanis, Elks and Masons, before seeking elective office to be of service to America, Kensas and to our President; I was also wearing a Ray Page color-portrait button on 14 September As per letterhead, I've plugged and voted Nixon twice, and look forward to a successful repeat in '72 - which is why I ask your attention now to what might later prove damaging and would certainly be embarrassing to the Presi- dent. I check before I chirp, and so implore that you peruse and digest my still unfolding findings (non-published) on Ray who, to be indulgent, appears "a lad of 49 going on 9". a perennial school-boy, a Peter Pan who refuses to leave his academic cocoon of subsidized immaturity for the adult world of ful responsibility imperative to the job of Regional Director of Education for 01 states, an approximate eigth of the Presidential Electorate. To those less indulgent, Page appears guilty of fraud and a staggering betrayal of the Publ Trust for the entire Illinois Electorate. Is irresponsibility to be rewarded by a position of National Public Trust requiring a Neil McElroy of experience and responsibility? Does the Presider wish to give 1/8 of his Electorate and $10-815 billian of our tax monies to charming child Ray as a gold star on his report card? Authority, Ray assumes responsibility, he chune - and why not? Having been subsidized all of his life, responsibility is both foreign and frightening to him. McElroy, if he' take on another stint of selfless public service as he did for Eisenhower, would prove a feather in the Nixon cap for stature at lagging polls. kcElroy was weaned on education;both parents were teachers, and he worked his way the Harvard on a piceolo he 18 Ohio (one of District 5 HEW) born and resident, and has kept P&G (with Ivcry)afloat/top rating internationally over the year Responsibility is his way of life, and the American Electorate rightfully do expect that of anyone allowed to administer its funds and the education of 11 children, our future. "Given the facts", to quote L duPont Copeland, 'people will see that profit 18 the mainspring of the system upon which government a depend for all its revenue" the taxpayers are hurting and becoming increas. ingly astute, not apathetic, about where, how and thru who their taxes are -IMORE- Preservation Copy cont... Chairman & Mrs Dole . 2 February 71 going. I'm certain you'd both agree that Page is completely unqualified (and thus would hurt the '72 incumbency of the President, should he 80 appoint) after perusal and hearing of data, current and pending: I again urge you to learn-and-advise before appointment of HEW-5 Reg. Dir. Education. And, on the recent White House addition-at-our-expense of Peter George Peterson, 1t was charming publicity to have him piously tell media he had divested himself of stock and directorship with Bell and Howell . AND of stock and directorship with The First National Bank of Chicago. but there has been no stock - neither stock nor directorship possible with/in this bank since 23 January '69 when it became the wholly owned subsidiary of a one bank holding corporation of Delaware) with total directorship in Chicago area, called First Chicago Corporation; on 1 and 8 of January '69 it acquired all common stock of 1st National Bank of Chicago on a share for share basis; Peterson makes no mention of divesting himself of this stock or director- ship as one of 20 directors (since Livingston died) & 12,879 stockholders; all this could get sticky image-wise for incumbency to an increasingly astute Electorate. Nor 1s my turning to you disloyal to Percy . his payrollers are diligent in keeping him both unavailable and uninformed; I asked interview on Page data with Percy, since he did the nominating and so could also be embarrassed. I was "relegated", and refused to divulge data to less than the Senator; my intent-is to help and protect '72 Republican and Nixon election - not to embarrass anyone. As for Fercy wanting Page, among other quoted ressons, "because Illinois 18 the largest mid-west state", he seems to have lost his knack for accuracy enjoying the club on The Hill for which the Electorate picks up his tab; of HEW District 5's six states, in mileage, Minnesota and Michigan are both considerable larger than Illinois . while Ohio, almost the smallest, is only 431,956 less populeus (Illinois-56,400 miles, 10,973,986 population Ohio-41, 222 miles, 10,542,030 population - including one well qualified for the Regional Directorship which Illinois, with allrespect to Page and Percy, has not!) Please let me know when you find it feasible for us to meet, either after- noon or evening as mornings are prohibitive for me physically. at your convenience in the Loop (other than Central Committee or Percy Office) or North Loop. Did you read the Drummond piece 19 January 71? It fits my plea Working toward a Nixon ticket and Republican victory for '72, with congrate ulations again on your Charrmanship for that goal, Cooperatively & cordially, Mrs. William Grey cc: Neil McElroy H.R.
