Tufts - his wife and his mother-in-law (Mrs. Richard Lynch who is one of the cousins on the list which your mother crossed off) (See attached letter) Received March 29, 1971 Dear Miss Woods: I should like to ask a favor -- three invitations to Tricia Nixon's wedding for my wife, Mrs. John M. Tufts, for me, Dr. John M. Tufts, and for my mother in law, Mrs. Richard Lynch. My wife is a second cousin of Miss Nixon sharing Patrick Ryan as a great grandfather. We had named our son Patrick to keep the name in the family. My Cousin, Dr. William Orville Mendenhall, then President of Whittier College, performed the marriage ceremony for President and Mrs. Nixon. Mrs. Lynch and Mrs. Nixon are first cousins. President Nixon was so kind as to invite us to his inauguration. We take great pride in having met him for a pleasant conversation. We also met Tricia and have a lovely snapshot of her. She is charming. We would be most honored to receive invitations to Tricia's wedding if it is possible to obtain them. Sincerely, s/John M. Tufts Professor of English Western Connecticut State College Brookfield Center, Conn. March 23. 1971 From Jack Gleason -- to pass along to RMW He had a request from Al Gordon, Sr. wondering if the First Lady intends to invite the Gordons to the wedding. Jack said Gordon knows the Cox's, quite apart from the Nixons. and they would rather not be invited through the Cox's. He said something about being somewhat instrumental in Julie going to Chapin and on to Smith since he is on the Board of Trustees. Off the record he said that Cox just last month came to him because he is on the board of Trustees at Harvard -- he does not want this repeated but stated he would never do for his own son what he is attempting to do for Cox.
