All of them were here before 1775, and on\nthe average they arrived in 1695. Among the President's\nmore prominent relatives are the following:\n(1) John Bartram, a prominent 18th century naturalist and\nbotanist.\n(2) Daniel Webster, to whom the President is related through\nthe Griffiths, Hussey and Bachiler families, and who is about\na 9th cousin.\n(3) John Greenleaf Whittier, to whom the President is related\nthrough the Griffiths and Hussey families.\n(4) The late actor, Robert Taylor (Spangler Arlington Brugh),\nto whom the President is about an 11th cousin through the\nTrimmer family.\n(5) The Rockefeller brothers, who are the President's 8th or\n9th cousins through the Trimmer family.\n(6) The first Mrs. Nelson Rockefeller, who is the President's\n8th cousin through the Griffith, Hussey and Brinton families.\nNoble Melencamp\nMEMORANDUM\nTHE WHITE HOUSE\nWASHINGTON\nJanuary 19, 1970\nMEMORANDUM FOR\nRose Mary Woods\nSubject: Well-known Presidential Relatives\nIf you think it appropriate, you might want to let the President\nknow that he is related to the following famous Americans. This\ninformation comes from Dr. Bell and other relatives and citizens\nwho have written since last January:\n1. Daniel Webster. The President shares a mutual 10 greats\ngrandfather with him - the Reverend Stephen Bachiler who\ncame to Massachusetts in 1632.\n2. John Greenleaf Whittier. His mother, Abigail, was a\nsister of the President's 5 greats grandfather, John Hussey.\n3. The late Robert Taylor, the actor. He and the President\nare about 8th cousins through the Trimmer family.\n4. The Rockefeller brothers. They are related to the\nPresident through the Trimmers. Their common\nancestor was Johannes Trimmer, who came to America\nin 1738.\n5. John Bartram, the famous 18th century botanist. He\nmarried a Mendenhall and is the President's 6th great\nuncle. Dr. Bell's latest estimate is that the President\nhas 2 million identifiable cousins.\nTwo-thirds of the President's ancestors were Quaker and on the\naverage they landed in America about 1695.
