January 8, 1971 Carl L. Shipley Member for District of Columbia 1108 National Press Building Washington, D. C. 20004 (202) 783-1647 Honorable H.R. Haldeman Assistant to the President The White House Washington, D.C. Dear Bob: In the event you have not seen it, I am enclosing a copy of the current Washington National Symphony program where on page 3 a reference is made to the President's cooperation in connection with financial support for the symphony. I think there is considerably more political mileage in this situation, and suggest that you try and get the President and the Vice President and their wives together to jointly occupy the President's Box at one of the concerts between now and the end of the symphony sea- son. I have acted as legal counsel and served on the board of directors of the symphony for many years, and during the entire period Democratic Administration officials have played an active role in the symphony and in the Kennedy Center. You will note from the names of the board of directors now that we have only Dick Kleindienst, John Warner and Mrs. Ehrlichman from the Nixon Administration. You will notice that Ted Kennedy's wife and Hubert Humphrey's wife are still on the board of directors as are Paul Nitze's wife, Walter Washington's wife along with former Navy Secretary Paul Ignatius, LBJ's inaugural chairman, Dale Mil- 1er, etc. When our officials attend the symphony, the ladies pages here in Washington take very little notice and concentrate more on the Democratic personalities with whom they have identified over the years. Following President Nixon's lead, maybe it would be politi- cally useful for us to have a calculated program of having cabinet offi- cers, White House Staff members, etc., attend the symphony and arrange Honorable H.R. Haldeman January 8, 1971 Page Two to have our own PR coverage with photos so that we become identified in the public mind as equally interested in the cultural activities as the Kennedy's, et al. Perhaps Mrs. Kleindienst or Mrs. Ehrlichman could under- take an informal program of this kind to supplement what they are now doing. They both are most helpful and establish a fine image, but it simply is not getting the recognition that it should, and we simply cannot afford to be dumber than our opponents when it comes to exploiting every little situation that can lead to political advantage. Sincerely yours, Carl Carl Shipley CLS:dc Enclosure
