MEMORANDUM FOR:
JON M. HUNTSMAN Jmt
RAY PRICE
FROM:
SUBJECT:
Ron Roman's - YGOP
The Daily News Summary carried an article stating that the National
Chairman of the YGOP, Ron Romans, sent Senator Muskie a bottle
of "No-Doz" pills, charging that the Democrat had taken a "six year
nap" while Kennedy and Johnson escalated the VN war. "Now, suddenly
the sleepy Senator yawns, sits up and speaks to us from the politcal
land of nod. Suddenly, he wants out of VN and wants out now. 11 The
Chairman charged that "for six years Rip Van Muskie snoozed in the
beds of Kennedy and Johnson rubber-stamping escalation of the war
Why did he conceal his true feelings from the people while publicly
voicing approval for the Johnson policy -- even to the point of fighting
for the Johnson-backed Vietnam plank in 1968? 11 Romans said he sent
Muskie the stimulant pills so that the Senator "can stay awake while
the Nixon Administration brings the war to an honest, honorable and
open settlement. 11
It has been suggested that a note of thanks be sent to Ron Romans
regarding his remarks.
Please submit response to the Office of the Staff Secretary.
Thank you.
