MEMORANDUM
FOR:
The President
FROM:
George Bush
SUBJECT:
New Jersey Governor's Race
Governor Cahill still wants to see you. I told Dave Parker we
should hold up on this right now.
Representative Sandman, who has formally announced, is coming to
quietly see me this week.
Governor Cahill sent Nelson Gross to tell me that Sandman's charges
about corruption are not true, are derisive, and are hurting.
Gross wanted to have us find a way to remove Stern, the U. S. At-
torney, a Case man, who is "stirring things up." I told Gross this
would not be possible at this time.
I suggested to Dave Parker that perhaps a good picture with Cahill
when he comes to the White House with all the Governors could suffice.
Nelson Gross himself told Cahill that with Sandman in the race the
White House would have to be very careful about appearing to intervene.
I will talk to Sandman, to our state leaders, and will keep you in-
formed.
No action requested.
