BROWN III JRB SUBJECT: Presidential Biography Attached at Tab A is a letter from Billy Graham reporting that Doubleday has approached Mr. John Pollock of England about the possibility of doing a biography of the President. Mr. Pollock did a biography of Billy Graham a few years ago. Mr. Graham was very pleased with the biography and therefore commends Mr. Pollock to the President. Jim Keogh recommends against a commitment to Mr. Pollock for the following reasons: 1. He doubts that we would want to choose Pollock, a British author, as the first official biographer. 2. It would require too much effort on the part of members of the family and staff and others for a book that would not be published until about 1976. 3. Jim feels that the decision on an authorized biography of the President is one that should be deferred at least until after 1972. With your approval I will ask Jim Keogh to draft a letter to Mr. Pollock informing him that we are not interested in commissioning a biographer for the President at this time. Approve H Disapprove
