THE WHITE HOUSE
WASHINGTON
August 15, 1972
ADMINISTRATIVELY CONFIDENTIAL
MEMORANDUM FOR:
H. R. HALDEMAN
FROM:
BRUCE KEHRLI
BOK.
SUBJECT:
Cap Weinberger at the
Convention
John Dean checked once again on the possibility of
Cap Weinberger going to the Convention and reiterates
the point that it's fine for him to go as a casual
observer as long as he picks up his own expenses and
does not participate. He can observe the proceedings
and, of course, attend any social functions; however,
he should not get involved in any other way.
John Dean has talked to Weinberger about these re-
strictions and Cap has agreed to abide by them.
Whether he does and whether anybody with Weinberger's
political background could go to a political convention
without getting involved in the politics remaine to
be seen.

MEMORANDUM FOR:

FROM:
BRUCE KEHRLI BANC
SUBJECT:
Weinberger's Appeal to
Go to the Convention
Attached is an appeal from Cap Weinberger asking if you
have any suggestions about his going to the Convention. (Tab A)
It's certainly an emotional one as there is no legal
way that he can go because he is Hatched.
I double-chocked with John Dean on the appeal and he
recommends holding fast on this one.
Suggest you sign the attached to Weinberger. (Tab B)

Ed Nixon entitied ": Remember Dick". This is scheduled

President with : i: as be would probably spend more
time than it was worth playing around with the wording.
I found out about jt through Price's assistant and
asked for a copy. 3.5 arrived after the magazine had
already started printing the article, however, it
can be pulled out of the publication.
Suggest you review iL as it contains some very
personal anecdobes. You may or may not want to
cover it with the President. Please let me know.

The August 8 News Summary contained the following note:
The President of the American Jewish Congress
has urged fellow Jewish leaders to refrain from
endorsing or attacking WH candidates. Rabbi
Hartsberg said "the record of both Dem and GOP
Presidents and Parties show S no real division on
the issues of Israel and sympathy for Soviet Jewry. 11
Referring to the above, it was requested that our Israeli friends
be told coldly that they can't have it both ways.

the coverage of the McG campaign so far has demon-
