MEMORANDUM FOR JOHN MITCHELL
"Salute to the President" Dinners were held in twenty
different locations throughout America on November 9, 1971. The price per person
was $500.00, and close to 9,000 supporters of the President attended.
The Dinners accomplished the obvious objective of
raising a substantial amount of money. The anticipated gross total of $4,370,000 will
be split evenly between the National Committee and State Republican organizations
after deductions for expenses which include a $400,000 allocation to the Senatorial
Campaign Committee.
To date, we have already received $1,038,000.00
of the total which is reflected in our current Daily Cash Position Report (See Attachment 1).
Equally as important as the pure dollar value, the
dinners generated much enthusiasm for the President and brought people together in a
united effort, which helped to strengthen the financial base of the Republican National
Committee while strengthening our state and local Republican organizations.
The Dinners also produced a number of individuals
who will be helpful in fund-raising efforts in the future by testing their performance under
fire. Also, a number of potential contributors were found, and we are proceeding to secure
lists from each Dinner Chairman. We can also assess to a degree the effectiveness of our
state and local political organizations by their willingness to cooperate with the various
Dinner Chairmen.
In some areas, such as Atlanta and Rochester, this was
the first time a Dinner of this nature had ever been held. In other cities, such as
Charlotte, Dallas, Miami, Nashville, Pittsburgh and St. Louis, the amount raised was
substantially higher than previous dinners of this type. Attached is a list of the cities
showing gross revenue from each Dinner and the anticipated net to the RNC (Attachment II).
Also shown in Attachment II are the results from the $1000-per-person Dinner in September
1968 in the corresponding cities.
