I think\nyou know how much I respect and admire how you think\nand act. No one in this Administration in the past\ntwo years has been more steadfast and loyal, more\ndiscreet, more influential for good, more constructive.\nWhen the history of the Administration is written,\nI feel sure that the first two years will be stamped,\nby some perceptive historian, as the Moynihan Years.\nIf they ever ask me, that's what I'll tell them.\nIn a way it is good that the Moynihans are all together\nin one place, all of the time, and that you are teaching\nyoung people to think the way you think and do things\nthe way you have come to do them.\nAt the same time, you are irreplaceable to the\nAdministration in the literal sense of the word.\nI find that there are some people in government who\ngo around looking over their left shoulder and thinking\nto themselves, \"What would Jack Anderson say about\nthat?\". Jack Anderson is not my first choice for a\nconscience. But I guess we all pick out people or\ninstitutions whose opinions we value and tend to\nmeasure our conduct by their hypothetical reactions.\nI propose that the Domestic Council institutionalize\nMoynihan in this capacity. From time to time we\nwill, if we may, send you proposals and ideas in order\nthat we'll know \"what Moynihan would say about that\".\nI think it's important that we know.\n-2-\nYou are a very good thing for this country and I\nonly hope that your comfortable pedagogical retreat\nand the warm bosom of your family will not make you\ncontent. From observation I think that it is\ndiscontent that makes you the most constructive.\nThank you for your tolerance toward us dry\ngeneralists. The comments following his California Club speech\nwere great.\nI'm enclosing a clip from the Pasadena Star News and\nthe list of those attending the news briefing. A good\namount of material was used on the radio because the story\nwent out on the syndicate wire.\nThe majority of reporters who covered the briefing\nsquirreled it away for background and several of them say\nthey have made good use of it.\nObviously, there were no television reporters because\nany station with an ambulatory crew had them at the earthquake\nscene all that week.\nI flatly guarantee a full house and yards of type next\ntime you come our way.
