I've suggested to her that she keep in close touch with you on this. The four conferences are: Republican Women's Southern Regional Conference March 22 -24, 1972 Atlanta, Georgia Republican Women's Western Regional Conference April 6 - 8, 1972 Phoenix, Arizona Republican Women's Midwestern Regional Conference April 20 - 22, 1972 Chicago, Illinois Republican Women's Northeastern Regional Conference May 18 - 20, 1972 Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Maria Downs (484-6534) is working on the preliminary arrangements should you have any questions or suggestions. EXECUTIVE John At- for the Re-election 4.7.72 of President 1701 PENNSYLVANIA AVENUE, N.W., WASHINGTON, D.C. 20006 (202) 333-0920 3½ city April 6, 1972 MEMORANDUM FOR: JOHN EHRLICHMAN FROM: KEN SMITH Sin SUBJECT: SPEAKING ENGAGEMENTS AT VANDERBILT AND MEMPHIS STATE LAW SCHOOL As you may know I have the responsibility of coordinating the speaking program of the President's representatives before young people. Two requests have come in for you to appear on campuses in Tennessee and both are excellent forums and programs. They are: 1) Vanderbilt University "Impact" series headed "Issues 1972" this year. This is an annual event at the university which draws heavy crowds and well known speakers (Lindsay, McGovern and Wallace as well as Gene McCarthy came last year). Your speech could cover any- thing from economics to a general overview of the Administration's domestic policies. A question and answer period would follow. 1,000 is the minimum number expected. 2) Memphis State Law Day celebration. The Memphis State Law School in connection with the Shelby County Bar would like you as their law day speaker (held early this year due to exams). A minimum of 1,200 people (students and lawyers) are expected. A television inter- view and press conference usually accompany such a speech and it al- ways gets wide coverage in the South. I believe both of these events can be scheduled for the same day. The best dates for both would be either April 17 or 18 although April 15 would be acceptable to both. The general schedule would be for the Memphis State speech in the early afternoon and the Vanderbilt speech for about 7:30 in the evening. Both will pay expenses. APR
