in their area of responsibility and then takes questions for the balance
of the hour.
Other speakers this group has heard and will hear are:
Thursday
Mr. Henley of Dent's staff (Dent had to cancel at the last minute)
Dolf Droge - three hours' worth on Vietnam
Friday
Bob Brown

Russell Train
Senator Dole made a surprise appearance at lunch
Luncheon speaker was Sherry Sheele, youngest elected state legislator in
the country (from South Carolina)

MEMORANDUM FOR KEN SMITH
Attached is a memorandum which Barbara Preve sent to
John Ehrlichman enclosing a copy of Ken Rietz's invitation
to Mr. Ehrlichman to appear before a gathering of young
people at the Convention on Sunday, August 20, 1972.
I get the distinct impression from Miss Preve's note that
she and Mr. Rietz were under the impression that our office
was ignoring their invitation. You and I know that that is
not true. On July 14, I sent to you a memorandum request-
ing the basic information we needed in order to consider an
invitation, which incidentally had been omitted from
Mr. Rictz's original memorandum.
Since I had not heard from you, I called you on August 7 at
which time you gave me the information I had requested.
Having received what I considered to be the basic informa-
tion needed to have Ehrlichman consider this proposal, I
presented the invitation to him on August 7. On August 8
I wrote you another memorandum and accepted the invitation
on Mr. Ehrlichman's behalf.
It is very apparent to me that the slippage and the delay in
responding to Mr. Rietz's initial memorandum was a result
of two things: (1) A very incomplete invitation; and (2) a
substantial delay in following up my memorandum requesting
additional information.
How about squaring away Mr. Rietz and Miss Preve?

MEMORANDUM FOR
DAVE PARKER
FROM
JOHN EHRLICHMAN
In 1960 we set up a campaign trip to the Catskills at
the strong recommendation of Nelson Rockefeller and
Louie Lefkowitz to appeal to the Jewish vote in New York
City. x Thousands of New York (Bronx) Jewish voters are
to be found in the big resort hotels of the Catskills over
Labor Day weekend. Short of stumping every street
corner in the Bronx, this is the best way to reach them.
We set up a motorcade among three hotels all within
very short driving distance of one another where, with some
advance work, big crowds could be assembled.
We had programmed a number of popular Jewish personalities
(Eddie Fisher, etc.) to travel with and introduce the candidate
at these various stops.
It was the Rockefeller organization's very strong feeling then
that this is the most effective kind of campaigning we could do
to impact the New York City vote. Whethere that is still a
valid judgment I don't know.
I have no doubt with the President going there as President now
that quite an enormous and enthusiastic turnout would be
possible with careful advance work.

AUGUST 28, 1972
FOR JOHN EHRLICHMAN
FROM DICK MOORE
SUBJECT: HAWAII TRIVIA
The 1960 result I mentioned was Kennedy 92,410;
Nixon 92,295 - a margin of 115, and a swing of
58 votes would have put the state in our column.
We should have worked a little harder.
If you are asked about complacency, the fact
that Hawaii taught us a lesson in its first
Presidential vote - and that you remember it -
should work well locally.

Thank you again for your kind remarks concerning
the staff and on behalf of myself and the staff I just
want to say how pleasant it was to have you with us.
