FE6-11-1/ EXECUTIVE Krogh, Egil
MEMORANDUM
Meiser, Robert N.
THE WHITE HOUSE
WASHINGTON
February 9, 1970
TO:
Harry Dent
FROM:
Tom Lias Am
Our copies of this invitation apparently crossed in the mail.
I have arranged to have the costs picked up for Bill Gifford.
I think he is well equipped to observe this group because of
his past experience on the Hill. If Bud Krogh wants to go
that would be fine too, but he probably isn't as familiar with
the players as Gifford.
As far as the group itself goes, it is obvious where they are
on the political spectrum.

As one of a small number of young, emerging, poli-
Columbus, Indiana
tical, business, civic, educational and media leaders,
Marge Sklencar
National Coordinator
you will hold a high position in the Republican Party
Vietnam Moratorium
or in a key independent political movement during the
next three decades. As a future leader, you can see
the necessity for the Republican Party to strengthen
itself in order to meet the overwhelming problems of
America in the coming decades.
This conference is a small, but essential, first
step for making these changes in the Republican Party.
This gathering will give you a chance to meet and exchange
ideas with young men and women from all over the country,
all levels of government, and many professions within the
political system. You will be able to talk with repre-
sentatives from all philosophies within the Republican
Party and establish contact with leaders of major inde-
pendent groups.
The conference discussions will be based on the
general theme "Needed: A Republicanism for the 1980's."
The sessions will help form in all participants a shared

-2-
understanding of the basic social forces at work today, their likely
consequences, and their implications for Republicanism in the future.
It is hoped that participants will pool their resources and come up
with ideas and alternative programs which they as future leaders can
implement. You will leave with some evidence too of the diverse
viewpoints and range of legitimate interests to which any national
party must accommmodate itself. In short, the purpose of the dis-
cussions will be to take a constructive look at the future, not an
adulatory or carping appraisal of the recent past and the present.
We are in the process of preparing a program which will be unique.
There will be no long-winded speeches, no dull research papers. The
agenda will be built around a number of discussion leaders who will
be selected not only for their expertise, but also for their ability
to stimulate discussion and present new perspectives. Everyone will
be urged to participate freely and openly. You will be receiving
more detailed information on the program itself soon.
The cost of the conference is $52, which covers room, board, trans-
portation from Washington, D.C. and conference activities at Airlie
House over the weekend of March 13-15. If we are successful in fund-
raising efforts, this cost may be reduced substantially, but plan on
paying this amount.
Because space is limited at Airlie House to about 220 partici-
pants and because we anticipate considerable interest, participants
will be selected on a first come, first serve basis. We urge you
to return the enclosed reservation form as soon as possible to insure
lodging. All reservations must be received by February 20. More
detailed logistical information will be sent to all participants
at the end of February.
We hope you will be able to attend. We think it will be a
challenging and rewarding weekend.
Sincerely,
THE SPONSORING COMMITTEE
